Plaxico Burress Out of Court and onto the Field?

Former New York Giant Receiver Still Wants to Play This Year

Vonda Menard
Plaxico Burress was in court Monday morning addressing chargers that arose from his arrest last year, for carrying an unlicensed, concealed weapon into a New York nightclub. His lawyer was able to get the case adjourned until September. By delaying the case, Burress is hoping he'll be able to play in the NFL this year. He hopes to sign with a team, his third, before training camp begins. Instead of saying I screwed up, I took a concealed weapon into a crowded night club, Burress is doing whatever he can, to at the very least, delay paying for his crime.

What if the bullet from Plaxico's gun hit an innocent patron, not his leg? Burress' lawyer states, "There is not a victim in this case except Plaxico Burress," as if that should matter. The fact is, Plaxico Burress broke the law when he brought a concealed, unlicensed gun into a crowded night club. In New York carrying a loaded handgun carries an automatic three year prison sentence, case closed, but things are often different for the rich and famous.

There's been a lot of talk about Brett Favre and his inability to retire and teams fearful of signing Michael Vick, a criminal who at least has paid his debt to society. I'll be disappointed with any team that signs Burress. Playing in the National Football League is a privilege and Burress doesn't deserve that privilege right now. I don't want my young sons who play football, to watch Burress continue to play even though he's broken a law and has yet to be punished. Burress and his attorney's can push the court dates back in an effort to delay any punishment from the league, but football owners don't have to employ him. Let him really pay for what he's done.

Some athletes can choose to act like entitled jerks, above laws that most of society has to obey, but we don't have to let them get away with it
