While on a team, the most popular strategies are to rush and to "cc", or creep. These strategies work when you're on a team because it'll allow you to either wipe out the opposing forces rather quickly, or build up your best units into much more powerful units, while will allow you to dominate once you're finally sent off into battle.
Rushing is effective if you know how to do it in an extremely fast manner. To rush, you'll need a hero which can do good damage right away. You're also going to want to pump out as many units as fast as you can. Build archers, grunts, footman, fiends, ghouls, or anything else that can be built quickly and cheap. Once you have your hero and about 5 units, you should be ready for the rush. If you're on a team, make sure everyone else is ready, gather, and attack the nearest player. If you're unaware of where your enemies are, send off scouts in the begininning of the game, these can be anything, even your gatherers. Just find where they are fast, and try to remain undetected. This will also give you the chance to see what they're building, where you can build your units around to play against their weaknesses.
Creeping is another great strategy, and is probably the most popular strategy played. In this strategy, you build a hero first, get a few units, then go and kill "creeps" or the neutral creatures guarding mercenaries or just standing around. These will give your hero experience, which in turn can be used to make your hero much more powerful. As your hero gains more experience, he will increase his armor, damage, health, and mana, as well as get new abilities to help obliterate your opponet. There is no other more useful unit in the game than a powerful hero. While you're leveling with your hero, you will get gold from eliminating creeps. Use this gold along with what you're gathering to build more units to continue creeping, yet still continue building up your base and work towards your final army. Get upgrades on the final units you intend to use, and make sure to keep your gold spent. When you and your allies are ready to attack, make sure to plan it out carefully, and keep your hero safe while in battle for maximum efficiency!
The above strategies may be the most common, but there are definitely several less common, not always effective strategies. Some people like to build towers like a mad man, I call this towering. This works only as a defensive method, unless the player you're going against just allows you to build towers all the way up into their base. Make sure to get siege weapons for backup, as your opponet will likely get them as soon as they can to eliminate your towers without being attacked. This strategy will get you a win on occasion, but only if you can manage to keep your towers as well as your main base protected at all costs. I recommend trying other strategies for faster and more efficient wins before this specific strategy.
Teching is another strategy, which I see people use on occasion. This strategy is actually very effective, so long as you remain safe while you're teching. In this method, you're attempting to get the best units as fast as possible. You eliminate time and gold wasted on units you use for creeping by simply not creating them and focusing primarily on getting your best units. Players who tech will outrun other players in a hurry if they make it to their units aimed for before they are attacked. If you plan to tech, know that you need to do this fast, and you need to make sure you either have protecton or your opponet doesn't plan on rushing. Another great thing to do after teching is to get two heroes, and level them extremely fast by wiping out all remaining creeps on the map after you've teched. You'll have plenty of experience, and your army won't even have a dent in it. Not to mention, you'll earn some extra gold for additional upgrades or more units.
"Massing" in units can be effective as well, so long as you have other players to give you a decent variation in units. Massing in units is typically done with the first units you can create, or sometimes second. For example, a Night Elf would probably mass produce archers or huntresses. An orc player would probably mass in either grunts or headhunters. It's important to mass in whatever your allies need. If you don't have any anti-air units and all melee, make sure to make powerful ranged units in a fast manner. You'll need to have some variation for massing in these units. Also, get heroes with auras that will maximize these units somehow. If you manage to get the time, get a few casters for buffs, and watch how much better you'll do. If you're going to mass, you're better off creeping and then attacking immediately after, because you have more than likely creeped faster than your opponet. When massing in select units, make sure to get the upgrades maximized for those units!
The above strategies are the most used, and I would recommend the first two and the last two. They're both quite effective, and if you know how to use any of them you can win quite easily. I hope this guide has made it easier for you to play Warcraft III, but more importantly, just use whatever strategy you're comfortable with, but at least try them all once!
