"Play it. You'll like it!" promised my husband a few days ago as he downloaded Minecraft to each of the computers in our house. When I asked him what Minecraft is, he explained that it is a simple game that allows users to construct a world that is all their own and learn to survive in it.

"Like the Sims for the PC?" I asked? The answer was a short, yet definitive, NO.

Minecraft is a PC game that is focused on surviving and building a life in a world where everything is made out of blocks. It's like playing with Legos, lincoln logs or building sand castles.... Except that you do it while being attacked by zombies and harassed by noisy chickens. It's engaging, addictive and a whole lot of fun.

Developed by game designer Markus "Notch" Persson, Minecraft launched in 2009 and has been slowly constructing random environments on computers worldwide. With over a thousand servers and 1.7 million downloads, Minecraft is arguably the greatest game for the PC that you've never heard of. Built around the endless fun of being able to construct buildings, towers and other structures by moving blocks across the landscape; Minecraft also has the added element of survival to keep this game for the PC both interesting and engaging.

Populated with animals to be used as food sources and producers of leather, wool and feathers; the game allows you to construct clothes, tools and sustenance to keep you alive. The randomly spawning zombies, skeletons, giant spiders and exploding Creepers aren't there to keep you company though, they're there to kill you!

Visually simplistic, Minecraft is a game that isn't about realistic dismemberments or FPS blood-splatter. It's something that PC gamers of all ages can, and should enjoy. With simple WASD controls, point and click action and a seemingly endless environment, this is one PC game which is only limited by the confines of your imagination. And PC gamers with active imaginations come up with some pretty incredible creations. Some of the most notable creations that have been broadcast around the internet are The Arc de Triomphe, recreations of Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural creations, a virtual reproduction of the USS Enterprise and more.
