It's a Mod for Valve's Source Engine, Which Most PC Gamers Should Own

SM
If you are a fan Goldeneye 007 for the N64 (if not, you should be) and own any Source engine game-like Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, or Counter-Strike: Source-you are in luck. Goldneye: Source is a Source mod that aims to bring the excitement of the original game to PCs everywhere. Maps, characters, and weapons are all back in gloriously updated 3D. Grab your remote mines and head back to the facility one more time, because over a decade later this game still rocks. It truly pushed the envelope for all future first-person shooters, and it is great to see that some mod developers acknowledged that and brought us this gem.

Not only that, but the diverse team behind this game is committed to getting GE007's gameplay up to date. Careful tweaking has been enacted to attempt to make every aspect of the game feel more like it belongs on your computer in the year 2009. The team makes sure to monitor the community's requests and responses on their forum, as any modern game producers should. And the community is strong, though it would be nice to see Valve put the game up in the mods section of their store to attract even more attention to it; in time, perhaps.

In any case, this game is a win-win situation for anyone able to play it. Diehard fans will appreciate relieving the N64 experience and uninitiated new-comers will finally get to see what all the fuss was about with that truly classic game. I will never forget the countless hours of fun I had with friends playing the original. It was honestly one of those games that made people come knock on your door just to play. The balance of the weapons and the craftsmanship put into the layout of the environments made every multiplayer session an outstanding experience.

Since you're actually still reading this instead of checking out the game and its website, then I might as well share a tragic story entwined with the history of this game modification. The original founder and director of Goldeneye: Source's development quite unexpectedly killed himself in 2006. But the remaining team has since rallied together and development of the mod has progressed at a furious pace. GE:S has won a lot of awards over the years and, as discussed, has a solid community behind it. The game is in great shape right now so give it a try.
