Springtime. When you have children and you feel like you've been aching to get out of the house all winter long, the warmer weather is a blessing. With warmer weather comes so many more outdoor options for your family entertainment. For us, playgrounds are frequented throughout the week. They're fun, free, and they allow my three-year-old to exert his energy and my ten-month-old to soak in some new scenery. If you live in or around Amherst, New Hampshire and are looking for some local playgrounds to visit, here's a list that you may find helpful:

Cemetery Fields:

70 Merrimack Rd
Amherst, NH 03031

The only real playground in Amherst, Cemetery Fields has a good amount to offer. It's set back from the road, so it's rather safe. There is one large main playstructure in the center of the playground with two swing sets (baby swings included), a tire swing, two digger toys that my oldest gravitates to, and two bouncing toys as well. There is also a large hill set away from the playground itself that children tend to enjoy climbing up and running down, or for those that are on the younger end, scooting down on their bottoms :) This is also one of the fields that the Amherst Recreation Department tends to use for sports practices as my three-year-old has soccer once a week on the fields set apart from the playground. There is a porta potty next to the field. Beware in the summer months, though, as there is no shade.

Keyes Field:

Elm Street
Milford, NH 03055

Keyes Field is one of our favorites. Like Cemetery Fields, it's set away from the road so it's rather safe. Between the parking lot and the playground, there is a gate for added safety measures. There is a larger playstructure that caters toward older children (my three-year-old adores this structure) with various slides, including one that is enclosed like a tunnel. There's also a balance beam, and climbing walls on this structure. Set away from this area is a toddler structure with slides and stairs. There is also a see saw, baby swings, larger swings, a giant sandbox and a merry-go-round. There is a bit of shade to keep cool, picnic tables to eat on, and grassy areas and park benches to sit. There's a porta potty if needed. (There is no set number on Elm Street, but the entrance is pretty much across from a small Mobil gas station with two stone pillars on either side).

Timber Town:

20 County Rd
Bedford, NH 03110

Ann DeNicola Memorial Playground (also known as Timber Town) is another of our favorites. It's gated and there are trees to provide shade in the hot summer months. There are two separate playstructures, one for older children and another for younger children. There's a tire swing, baby swings, children's swings, a tunnel to climb through, and some stationary bouncing toys. There's a large field beyond the gated area where you can picnic or play, and there are picnic tables within the playarea itself. There is also a porta potty.

Livingston Park:

352 Hooksett Road
Manchester, NH 03104

Livingston Park has a great playground for the kids to play. Plenty of shaded areas for the hot summer months. There are two separate play structures. One geared towards older children, and another geared towards toddlers. There's a swing set (baby swings included). There are a couple of benches to sit on as well. Livingston also has a pond with a trail that loops around the water. Although stroller-friendly, it can be a bit bumpy at times with wheels. My three-year-old can easily walk the entire trail while I have my ten-month-old in the stroller. Although I could be wrong, I have unfortunately never found a public bathroom at Livingston.

Kids Cove:

487 Daniel Webster Highway
Merrimack, NH 03054

Kid's Cove is a great wooden playground. It's set back from the road and the structures are all connected, one very big wooden playarea. Many parts of the structure are enclosed, kind of like a tunnel, which is something my three-year-old absolutely adores. There are swings here as well.

Wasserman Park:

116 Naticook Road
Merrimack, NH 03054

Wasserman Park is much more than a playground. It has walking trails and a town beach and has buildings as it's part of a summer camp. They do, however, have a great playarea open to the public. Wasserman has two separate playstructures, see saws, many swings (baby swings included), a balance beam, and a picnic table for eating. There's a large grassy hill that children tend to enjoy climbing, and a field that they can run around in. There are also public bathrooms set just slightly away from the playground itself.

Greeley Park:

105 Concord Street
Nashua, NH 03064

The Playground at Greeley Park is on the smaller side and parts of it look quite old. There are a couple larger slides. There's a playstructure with stairs, slides and a tunnel, and there are swings as well (with baby swings). A short walk away, there's a small wading pool for use in the summer months, and a fountain that spurts water that my son loves to splash in. Beyond the playground, there are also picnic areas and walking trails. There are also public restrooms at Greeley.

We absolutely love the warmer weather enabling us to get outdoors and playgrounds are areas that we frequent. If you live in the Amherst area or are visiting, hopefully this list will help you and your children to get on out and play!

Leaving the field of Early Intervention (which I adored), I moved to NH in October 2007 where I made the decision to stay home full-time with my then 17-month-old son. I have since had two more boys. I con...  View profile
