Playhouse Disney - Is it Right for Your Child?

Pamala L. Ott
Are you looking for some quality programing for your toddler or preschooler? The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the children watch no more than two hours of television a day and children under two not watch any television at all, but as parents we know that often times this is near impossible to prevent. So if your child does watch television perhaps Playhouse Disney is an option for you.

Playhouse Disney is on daily in the mornings starting at 6:00 am with Stanley, Monday thru Friday, and on Weekends Playhouse Disney kicks off with The Doodlebops. Playhouse Disney ends the morning with it's last show at 11:30 am with Charlie and Lola, Monday thru Sunday.

Each show on Playhouse Disney is no more than thirty minutes long which is perfect for smaller children. Smaller children don't have the attention span to pay attention to a show for more than fifteen minutes usually. Often times the shows are split into two fifteen minute segments with no commercials. Splitting the shows into two fifteen minute segments allows the child to be able to follow the story line through to the end and then watch another story line.

What's different about Playhouse Disney?

First and foremost it's educational. The characters are interactive with your child. They face the screen and ask the children to participate. This is how most of Playhouse Disney shows are produced. Why this is important is because it allows for a child to learn while watching instead of wasting time. Plus this kind of interaction keeps the attention of the child longer than a program that doesn't interact.

Playhouse Disney has nearly twelve thirty minute length shows. Between shows they run music videos that are age appropriate as well as small learning segments, which include Safety Patrol, which teaches children about safety issues. Captain Carlos teaches children about healthy eating. Feeling Good With JoJo teaches children exercises to help deal with stress and fear. Along with the above shows there are age appropriate music videos played and mini games that children can play as well.

What shows does Playhouse Disney offer?

Some of the most popular shows of Playhouse Disney are, Higglytown Heros, My Friends Tigger & Pooh, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einsteins, Handy Manny and the Doodlebops.

Higglytown Heros is a show that teaches children that all people are important no matter how small the job. Often times they showcase a job that any adult would see as unimportant and focus on how that person is a hero in their own job because if they didn't do their job, things would go wrong else where. They teach that everyone is important to help a town function at best capacity.

My Friends Tigger & Pooh is a mystery solving show which allows a child to participate in solving the mystery. This show may not be as appropriate for a child under two but it will still hold the attention of the child whether they are over two or not.

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is also a problem solving show which is full of bright colors and funny characters from Disney. This show asks for a lot of participation from the audience. They ask children to count, say words, and even participate in some of the actions of the show, such as running or rowing a boat.

Little Einsteins is a problem solving show as well which features classical music and famous artists. Once again this show asks for participation from the children in regards to counting and actions of the show, for instance children should pat their laps to make Rocket go or they'll conduct music to make things larger or smaller.

Handy Manny is a show about a handy man and his tools which teaches about team work and how every tool (person) is important. This show isn't interactive like the other shows but because of the talking tools, it will hold the attention of a child.

The Doodlebops is a show about a rock band. This show has very colorful characters and features songs and dancing which keep a child watching. It's interactive in that they ask children to learn a dance and perform it at the end of the show. This show is better suited for children over two but it will entertain children under two.

Overall Playhouse Disney is great for children in the morning while you're making breakfast, getting read for work or school, or are relaxing after waking up. The shows are age appropriate and non-violent and promote learning which is the most important for any parent, that their child be learning while watching television.
