Playing the Recorder is an Enjoyable Hobby
Recorders Are Affordable, Lightweight, Sturdy and Enjoyable Musical Instruments
Recorders are available in various sizes, colors, materials, and types. The most common recorder for a beginner is the soprano recorder. The recorders pictures include an alto recorder which is the largest, a soprano recorder which is the middle sized one and a sopranino recorder which is the smallest. The most available and most common material for the beginning recorder is plastic. Recorders are also available in beautiful woods. Most music stores carry a variety of recorders, music and accessories. Prices vary. Of course recorders are available from online shops also. Several well known manufacturers produce quality recorders. Most recorders come with a small bag or case with a cleaning rod, small cleaning cloth, and fingering chart.
If you have previously played a musical instrument you may learn to play the recorder by purchasing a beginning recorder method book and teaching yourself. If you are interested in classes to begin playing the music shop most likely has a list of instructors. The American Recorder Society lists available instructors also. Learning to play with an instructor does have its benefits. As with all instruments there are techniques that an instructor will lead you through to make sure that you are playing the recorder correctly.
Many communities have recorder groups or ancient music groups which you may join. By joining a group of recorder players you will be exposed to other types of recorders, a wide range of music and tips and techniques being shared. The American Recorder Society has listings of chapters in various locations and you should be able to find a group near you. Many of the groups offer small learning or practice groups, small playing groups such as for duets or quartets as well as larger concert groups.
As with beginning any musical instrument it takes quite a bit of practice to become familiar with both the instrument and the techniques involved. After a few lessons and a little practice you will soon be playing songs and melodies that are familiar and enjoyable. You will be able to advance to group playing if you are interested and even become involved in performances.
Playing the recorder is a very enjoyable hobby. Not only are the instruments affordable but they are durable, easy to care for, lightweight, and very easy to transport. Playing the recorder is a hobby that you may pursue and enjoy individually or as part of a group. Either way it is a very rewarding experience.
