Playoffs Vs. BCS in NCAA Football

So rumor has is that President Obama wants to see a change in the way the NCAA decides their national football champion. Apparently, the new change would see the BCS Championship be tossed out the window for a new playoff system. So exciting, right? WRONG! Think about it...do we REALLY need another set of playoffs in sports? Major League Baseball determines their World Series champion by playoffs. The NFL crowns their Super Bowl champion at the end of a long month of January playoffs. Even the NBA has playoffs to determine their champion. And let's not forget the 65-team battle that NCAA basketball uses every year for the Big Dance. Even the NIT gets in on the fun. So do we really need another playoff system? I would have to say no.

As far as I'm concerned, the current BCS Championship Series is just fine the way it is. Sure, it could use a little tweaking here and there to avoid the controversy that we dealt with last year, but hey...you can't please everybody. If you want my personal opinion, the last thing the world of sports needs is another playoff series. We deal with it in every other major sport, let's change things up a little bit. I like the fact that a team has to scratch and claw every year to make it to the top of their division or league. With playoffs, there is too much luck involved. As we've seen before, any team can have one lucky night where everything is clicking, and the next thing you know...you have a repeat of last year's Super Bowl between the Giants and the Patriots. The Patriots were undefeated the entire year, but all it took was one game by a team that didn't necessarily have the best record of the teams in the playoffs.

With the BCS Championship series, the teams battle all year long, and then when the Championship games begin, the best records get the best games. You don't let a single playoff game determine who gets the National Championship game. You look at things like overall performance, strength of schedule, and how well you played against that schedule. If you let playoffs decide the National Champion, then you're merely falling into rhythm with every other sport in the world that has playoffs.

Besides, if for nothing else, look at the excitement. With playoffs, you see the entire field and you pretty much know who's going to win a particular game. With the BCS, you don't necessarily get that. You get the season long struggle, and you let the records speak for itself. The top two teams will be standing for the last game, and they deserve to be there. That way you know that the championship game is going to be dramatic and exciting. Please...I'm begging you...NO MORE PLAYOFFS!!!
