Eager to play with some new technology, you're going to pick up the requisite motion controllers and Playstation Eye camera.
And a game.
But which one? You're already spending about $100 on the equipment, do you want to waste $40 on these release titles? I've distilled some reviews from sources such as ign.com, gamespot.com, and some videos through the Playstation Blog to tell you what should be the best release titles for what you're interested in.
A new wave of "party" games
You're going to find that the initial titles for the Move are party based. That means you're going to want to play them with a group of people or you won't have much fun. They're also family oriented, so if you have small kids or teens, they'll finally have some titles worth playing.
So are you a hardcore gamer? The releases like Killzone 3 and Socom won't happen for awhile. Sure there are some sports games at release time that are fun, but may seem a little gimmicky, or "I've seen that before on the Wii"-like. Maybe hold onto your cash until some more single player shooter types come out in the following months.
Playstation Move Bundle
Some of the bundled controller packs at the store will already come out with a game: Sports Champions. This is a game that consists of 6 events to play with up to 4 people. You've got frisbee golf, bocce, ping-pong, gladiator battles, volleyball, and the best one: archery. From the reviews, this is getting some positive support on a few of the events, but only on a few. The others get repetitive. However, it is a good display of the Move controls, possibly why it's included in the bundle.
Should you buy it if you are one of the few people that already own the Playstation Eye and you'll only buy the controller? Read on.
Kung-Fu Rider
Stay away from this title. It's a quirky sort of racing action game that is absurd and got poor reviews.
Eyepet
Less of a game and more of a sim pet game this is. It looks cute and I might pick it up for the kids, but I can't imagine a grown man buying this to play. Maybe I'm wrong and you're interested in growing a little creature from an egg. Have fun.
Start the Party
This is the ultimate party game at release time. Once again, if you are a single player type of gamer, you can stay away. This is a family friendly game that has mini-games thrown at you one after the other and whoever has the high score wins. The games look fun and the controls are spot on from the videos I've seen... like slicing fruits in the air, bopping a ball into a net, whack-a-mole, etc.
Family game.
Tumble
A cool game that is all about stacking blocks. This is a good game that showcases the Move's precision. I'm not actually sure if this is a full title or if it is a PSN release. As a full game, I'm not sure it's worth the $40 price tag.
In the game, you stack different blocks in a variety of events. It's a fun looking puzzle game, but again, you might get bored as a single player.
Brunswick Pro Bowling
If you like bowling, this actually looks pretty fun. Unfortunately, at this time the games are so similar to the Wii release titles. Sure the graphics are HD and the controls are 1:1 using the camera... but it's bowling.
Verdict
As you can see, nothing really stands out on the release date as a must buy if you're a single guy with no friends or family. If you've got small kids and you want to bring the family together... pick up:
Start the Party on release day.
You'll get a variety of fun activities that your 5-year old can play with the rest of you.
If you have teenage kids, pick up:
Sports Champions on release day.
The games are a bit more mature (nothing is rated M for mature, I'm just saying the games are less kid-like).
If you are a single person with no family coming over for the next couple of months:
Don't pick up the Playstation Move.... YET.
There are lots of great games coming out soon after release. Don't rush to the store to get the latest technology only to be foiled by the lack of high quality games.
They're coming. And soon!
