Please Cease and Desist

Volumes of Don'ts Vs. A One-line Do

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

If the highest Court would grant an order

To stop people from doing the things

Which hurt others that

They seem unable or unwilling to resist,

There would be a legal precedent

Established and hopefully enforced

For all who cause harm to others

To categorically cease and desist.

With our thousands of Penal Codes

Defining crimes and their consequences,

There is little addressed by way of prevention

To keep wrong-doing on life's sideline benches.

How we react and how punishment is meted out

Is akin to cementing good tiles together

With ineffective and pre-stained grout.

Rather than ceasing and desisting

After wrongdoing has already been committed,

Perhaps a different set of guidelines

Would, for all our welfare, be more suitably fitted.

With the right things to do

Defined clearly in every spoken tongue

Much of the anguish being cried and pain being wailed

Might be transformed into joyful songs being sung.

Perhaps there is just one that everyone seems to know

That is often referenced and recalled during worship

But forgotten as the torrential traumas of real life flow.

Known to some as the Golden Rule,

Little would need to be ceased or desisted:

Now, wouldn't that be both desirable and cool?

True. I bought a wooden sign recently that just said, "Love each other." I bought it thinking of it as a reminder for me and my husband to always be nice to each other, but it certainly applies to everyone. "..But the greatest of these is love."

So simple, yet it appears to be so complicated.

Wow! And here I’ve always felt we should adhere to the Golden Rule—as an example: A 10-year-old girl was deriding her 10-year-old friend because she didn’t have a cell phone. “You’re the only person in the world who doesn’t have one,” she laughed, hurting her friend to the core (you could see the hurt in her face & demeanor). I wanted to say to the culprit, “How would you feel if someone said that to you about something, such as your clothes?” But your implications… wow!
