Please Welcome the 'new' Norwich City Football Club

James Kent
It is now two months on from the debacle at Charlton and those changes are slowly but surely occurring. Bryan Gunn has added three new signings, and Norwich City has a six man strong board of directors. Furthermore, there remains the possibility of further additions to the board in the future. The search for investment goes on.

As ever speculation is rife with a striker and goalkeeper the main priorities. Paul McVeigh and Scott Nielsen are both on trial. McVeigh will need no introduction to Norwich fans but Scott Nielsen is a right midfielder who plays for Cambridge City. Alan Lee and Liam Dickinson are two likely targets to fill the void up front.

Alan Bowkett and Stephan Phillips are the new faces to join the board and David McNally has now also been added to the board. Personally, I think these are very strong appointments. Bowkett has a very impressive record of leading major businesses and in particular, rescuing ailing businesses. Phillips is the managing director of Archant (the group that owns EDP, Evening News and the Pinkun).

A few issues have been raised by the fans regarding these appointments. Firstly, it was initially stated David McNally would not be on the board. Secondly, there appears to be little fresh money coming in, and finally, a possible conflict of interest between Norwich City and Archant.

Fans are quite right to point out; David McNally was not originally supposed to be on the board. However, I understand the reasons why he is and really think he needs to be. I suspect, originally, the board had someone else in mind, but for whatever reason he didn't want to join the board. It was also pointed out by Michael Wynn Jones, that there must be a football expert on the board. Therefore, it was a no-brainer that McNally had to be there.

It is disappointing that no fresh investment has been found at this time. However, I believe there to be room for one or two additional personnel on that board. What we do have is an excellent group of individuals with business knowledge and experience. It should also be noted that the immediate priority is winning promotion out of League 1. To do that takes a lot of hard work, but not necessarily a lot of money. For example, Leicester managed to do so, with only £1 million spent in the transfer market.

The conflict-of-interest between Archant, and Norwich has been hugely overplayed. Editors write what they want without the interference of upper management. I'm sure more positive stories will come out than negative ones. However, if something needs to be reported I'm sure it will be.

I'm very happy with the changes that are taking place, and I'm very optimistic about regaining our place in the championship in the near future. I am encouraged by the fact that the new board has aspirations on reaching the Premier League. That is a long way off right now, but it's good to have long-term targets.
