Pledge Multi Surface: Product Review

Nikki
I am a member of several product review panels and regularly get free merchandise to try in exchange for a written opinion on how well the product works. My latest item to test was a 9.7 oz can of Pledge Multi Surface. It comes in two scents, Rainshower and Lavender Fresh. I received the Rainshower scent and wasn't too impressed with the smell. I expected an organic clean smell, but got a chemical scent instead.

This spray was originally released last year in a plastic bottle with a pump sprayer. This year, SC Johnson has revamped the packaging and the cleaner now comes in a metal can with a push button nozzle. The appearance of the new can is much more appealing to the eye than the normal plastic pump sprayer. I also like the push button action of the nozzle better. The nozzle causes the solution to come out in a fine mist with better coverage, which makes a little bit go a long way. The mist is "thicker" so it adheres to a cleaning cloth better and doesn't run down in streaks when applied to windows or other vertical surfaces.

Pledge Multi Surface claims to clean multiple surfaces such as wood, glass, mirrors, granite, electronics, stainless steel, plastic, marble, and chrome. It also promises to give streak free results. Following is a review of the results from my tests on different surfaces.

Cleaning Wood

I have mixed feelings about the wood cleaning abilities ... and here is why.

I like my wood furniture to shine after it's cleaned, similar to the results Murphy's Oil gives. This product did not give a nice glowing sheen to wood surfaces and the wood still seemed a bit "dry".

My coffee tables, end tables and curio cabinet all have both wood and glass and I normally have to use two different types of cleaners. With this product, I only have to use one because it's safe for both wood and glass. I thought this was fantastic and would recommend this product based solely on this aspect for anyone who has similar needs.

So, if you want your wood to shine this isn't the product for you. But if you have combination wood and glass furniture and want to reduce the number of cleaning products needed, then Pledge Multi Surface is a great product choice.

Results for Glass and Mirror

Incredible results achieved when cleaning glass surfaces. I tested it on eyeglasses, windows, the glass on a curio cabinet, and mirrors. The only thing I noted is that if there was a heavy build up of dust or grime on the glass, the product left behind a streaky film. But it was great for light cleaning use.

Performance on Stainless Steel and Chrome

Fantastic job cleaning light soap scum and water marks off bathroom and kitchen faucets. Also works well to remove fingerprints from stainless steel appliances with no streaks or film left behind.

Ability to Clean Marble and Granite

Tested on the granite countertops in my kitchen and marble tub in the bathroom. It removed smudges and dust on both surfaces, but didn't perform well on grease spots on the countertops.

Using on Plastics

I didn't do a test on any plastic surfaces.

Cleaning Electronics

I use special cleaning cloths our expensive electronic items, but did test the Pledge on my keyboard and mouse. The instructions on the can say to spray the cleaner on a cloth before using on electronics, so that's what I did. It worked great getting coffee stains and "gunk" off the keys and top of the mouse.

Bottom Line

Pledge Multi Surface does clean and dust multiple surfaces if you only have light duty dust, dirt, or scum buildup - and will give you streak free results under these conditions as well. If you have a thick layer of dust or scum, you'll need to use something stronger to clean with. Simply using this product alone on a heavy-duty household cleaning job will leave you with a streaky spotty mess.

I received my product free but looked online and it sells for around $5.50 at Walmart. That sounds a bit pricey but considering you can use this product in so many different areas, and a can lasts a long time, it's a good bargain overall. I will buy the product again, mainly to use on my combination wood and glass furniture, but only when I find it on sale and have a coupon.

A great product review!!! I`ve already used `Pledge` polish for decades, but not sure I would need this new product...still like just plain vinegar/water for glass and mirrors lol :)

If it doesn't make wood shine, don't think I would like it. Thanks for the review.
