Plight of a Poor Child

A dirty face and an empty belly are the trademark of you, the poor.

Sadly, as a child, you find it difficult to get yourself behind a classroom door.

The three R's do not matter when above your head there is no roof.

How can it when where your head will rest tonight is so aloof?

Other children carelessly have fun and play games.

While you wonder what their parents did different to earn their fames?

How could being in that building get you nice clothes, a house, a car?

To you those things seem so very far.

Learning those things, reading those books,

How can it save you from passersby tossing you a coin and giving you those pitiful looks?

How can you plan for tomorrow when today is so very hard?

What will you have to eat bread, or soup, or even lard?

The answers to these question lie far outside your hands.

They lie with your president and other high power bands!

Your situation is so desperate, but it is one you yourself will find hard to escape.

A better life for you is very hard to shape.
