Plot Twist Mania: 3am C-SPAN

C-SPAN: Recorded Speeches with Punchline Endings

Amy Barnes
I accidentally stumbled upon a great source of entertainment: C-SPAN! (http://www.c-span.org)

Two smiling men spoke last week, on what was supposed to be a calm speech about violence, drug abuse, and the legalization of Marijuana. I still don't know who they were because one can easily miss a name if your viewing is timed 'right.'

One speaker insisted that pot causes violence and then the other accused the first of lying. The first speaker mentioned that violence had increased and then the second speaker insisted that violence had decreased. The first speaker then suggested that there is invisible violence going on.

One very interesting C-SPAN program, discovered in the page search section from a search of the site for 'marijuana', http://www.c-span.org/newsmakers/walters.htm, reveals that all those anti-drug commercials may not have been effective. John Walters, Bush's anti-drug program director, was questioned by reporters and it's almost funny how the man dodges some of the questions, but the planning of the questions goes awry when some of the answers reveal a few disturbing things that the program wasn't really designed to reveal.

First, there were plans to bring drug testing into schools. Also, there were plans to have doctors test their patients. Walters discusses "Medicaid codes to allow the reimbursement for publicly cared-for patients for screening and brief interventions in the health care setting." This was definitely one twist that nobody saw coming.

The archives really are worth searching through, especially for students in need of material for heir work, but - beware - there are plot twists and turns that make screening necessary.

Simply restated, C-SPAN is a mixed bag worth investigating that has some really provoking twists in the content.
