Plus Size Prom Dresses for 2009

Alison S.
Finding a prom dress for the upcoming 2009 event is on the minds of many - and for some, it's harder than ever. Local retailers have limited sizes and styles, and finding something that fits may be harder than finding something that you like.
Fortunately, buying a dress on-line is easier than ever, and there are so many incredible styles out there for plus size women.

If you do a quick Google search, you'll find that Sydney's Closet is a website devoted to clothing and dresses for plus size women. They have prom dresses that will fit like a dream, but more importantly, everyone will think you look beautiful in it.
I like this web site because it features dresses that are incredibly detailed and unique.

My general advice to woman who are plus-sized is this: don't pick a neckline that is unflattering, and try to choose materials or patterns that hide bulges. Dresses fit snuggly, and so it's important to be honest with yourself in terms of how you look in it. Halter necklines look wonderful on anyone - whether they are a size 2 or 22. Corseted dresses are flattering but can sometimes be uncomfortable, and they can also create an unnatural look. Despite the challenges of finding a dress that fits, there are many out there I will recommend.

On the Sydney's Closet website, you'll find a dress entitled "Red Hot". It's actually the Favian Style 9188, and it's available in sizes 14W-24W on the Sydney's Closet side. I love this dress, and it's one of many Favian dresses that take celebrity style and make it wearable for the everyday girl. Every single feature on this dress is flattering - the empire waist, the a-line skirt. It's truly a beautiful dress, and it's featured at about $280. Favian dresses can be found multiple places on the web.

For a shorter, playful look, the "Sheer Delight" can be found on Sydney's closet, and it is also a flattering, gorgeous dress. It can be found for around $190 and it's perfect at a tea length. I particularly like this dress because the fabric is versatile, so you can pick satin or matte accessories. It's a Sydney's Closet design, and can also be found under SC8906.

The third dress that I find to be particularly flattering on Sydney's Closet is the "Stephanie" dress, otherwise known as Night Moves style 5880M. It's a full-length dress that has a corseted backing, as well as a tie around the middle. It draws attention upwards to the face, something every girl can appreciate. It's selling for around $350 currently.

Prom 2009 might also find you looking at other places on the web - one of my favorites is Serendipityprom.com. If you look under the Plus-Size section of their site, you can find some of the most incredible dresses. It's hard to identify just a few from the Serendipity site, when there are so many to choose from. Of them, however, I chose the following:

Available in sizes 0-26, style number 15156 has a definite flair to it - if you see it, you'll know what I mean. It's primarily a light purple, and the way to best describe it is probably one word: plaid. It remains classy, however. You'll receive high praise for stepping outside what is considered 'normal', but it is far from tacky.

Lastly, Sherri Hill makes a dress that is nothing but breathtaking. It's two-toned, and is made of silk chiffon. It comes in sizes 0-18, and is style number 3005. It's usually about $400, but worth every penny. This style is becoming extremely popular for 2009, and the prediction is that this style will out-do the traditional Cinderella style dress. The flow of this style dress creates attention, but it doesn't out-do everything else you've worked so hard for - the hair, shoes, and make-up. If you like this style, I suggest looking up different Sherri Hill dresses.

Keep in mind: you'll want to be comfortable, but it's important to feel pretty. If it's at all possible, keep the price hidden in the back of your mind. Prom only comes once, and looking your best is second only to feeling the best.
