Learning what to wear and what not to wear when you are over weight can be difficult. Often a persons first instinct when they are heavy is to wear more clothes or to wear bigger clothes. The key to dressing stylishly when you are over weight is to know your assets and how to highlight them. Learning how to avoid making some of the most common plus sized fashion mistakes will not only enhance your appearance, but it will increase your confidence as well.

Baggy is Not Better
The most common mistake people make when picking plus sized clothing is to pick things that are very loose fitting. Naturally when you are over weight you don't want to wear tight clothing, but wearing excessively baggy clothes can make you look frumpy and larger. Plus sized woman have curves and wearing outfits that highlight the right curves can make you look more slender. Wearing tailored outfits that highlight your slimmest areas and elongate your body is the smartest thing a plus sized individual can do. Doing this makes you appear thinner and more stylish. Nobody looks good wearing a sack.

Loose the Layers
Layering your clothing does not distract from rolls or fat, it only adds more weight to your already plus sized frame. Rather than layering to cover your undesirable areas, consider choosing more forgiving fabrics. Stay away from stretch materials, thin cottons, spandex, satin and lycra. Choosing materials that don't cling will make you look slimmer and you won't have to layer up to cover your imperfections. Again, if you pick he right cut and highlight the right areas you need not hide your shape.

Color and Fabric
Making the right color and fabric choices is essential to dressing when you are over weight. Black is always a great choice, because it is slimming. Denim is great as well, especially dark colored denim. Never choose fabrics that are to light or clingy. They will enhance flaws that you are intending to conceal. Always go with one solid color. Patterns and multi-colored outfits are not flattering. Additionally, if you really like stripes stay away from horizontal and stick with vertical. Vertical stripes will at least help elongate your frame.

The reality is layering our clothes and wearing baggy clothes doesn't fool anyone. Being comfortable in your wardrobe is very important to your self confidence. However, if you choose the right style in your actual size you can look chic and fashionable at any size.
