PMS Woes: Home Remedies for Breast Tenderness

Dee Jones
Breast tenderness is a common menstrual symptom that is experienced by the majority of menstruating women at one time or another. Caused by changes in estrogen levels, breast tenderness is completely normal, and it isn't a sign that you have a more serious medical condition.

But while breast tenderness is normal, it can also be extremely painful and uncomfortable. In fact, some women experience breast pain so severe, it can interfere with normal daily activities.

So, what can you do about breast tenderness?

Cut Back On the Caffeine

Do you need a cup of caffeine to get started in the morning? Do you rely on coffee to get you through the day? If so, caffeine could be contributing to your breast tenderness.

Cutting back on caffeine, especially in the week before your period starts, can help decrease the breast tenderness you experience every month.

So, about seven to ten days before your period is due to start, cut back on caffeinated coffee, tea, and sodas. Instead, switch to non-caffeinated alternatives.

If you absolutely must have your caffeinated coffee, try to limit yourself to one cup a day, and accept that this might mean suffering more breast tenderness than you would have if you'd gone without.

And read the labels of any over-the-counter medications you are taking. While over-the-counter pain relievers can relieve the pain of breast tenderness, many contain caffeine.

Wear a Sports Bra

Wearing a sports bra can help give your breasts added support, and help relieve breast tenderness. Just make sure you are wearing a sports bra that is the proper size.

Wearing any bra that's too small can contribute to breast tenderness. So, make sure all of your bras are the right bra size.

When to See Your Doctor

The breast pain you experience right before or during your period is usually nothing to worry about. But you should see your doctor if the pain lasts for a while after your period stops. You should also consult a physician if breast pain is localized, occurring in once specific spot within the breast. Either of the above could be signs of a serious medical condition.

Breast tenderness could also be caused by cysts in the breast, a condition that can be quickly treated by a doctor.

Breast tenderness is one of the most painful and uncomfortable menstrual symptoms. But, by keeping the above tips in mind, you can drastically decrease the amount of breast tenderness you have to endure each month.
