Aside from hosting the Red Barons, the stadium also hosted high school football games, field hockey, and marching band competitions. The field at one time had an artificial turf surface and bleacher seating, but that all changed in September of 2006 when the New York Yankees bought the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team. Along with a new team came renovations for the almost 18 year old stadium.
Once the Yankees announced their purchase, the artificial turf surface was removed and replaced with the grass surface seen on professional baseball fields. The bleachers were replaced with additional seating on the first and third base sides. Other changes made included the addition of a new party box, and former bullpens were also converted into party boxes at first and third base. The changes marked an exciting new era for baseball fans in Northeast PA.
Adjacent to the field is the popular Stadium Club restaurant. The restaurant is open seven days a week and offers an excellent view for anyone who wants to enjoy dinner and catch the Yankees in action. When there is no game, the Stadium Club is still known for the Best Sports Viewing in the area. They serve lunch and dinner beginning at 11:30 a.m. and have menus available for lunch, dinner, catering, luxury suites, and party decks. Live entertainment is available after home games on Thursdays through Saturdays.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees team store is located on the lower level of PNC Field. Shoppers will find Yankees apparel, baseballs, keychains, and other items available for sale. The store first opened in December in time for the Christmas shopping season, and choice items still can sell out quickly even with baseball in full swing.
A wide variety of concessions are available throughout the stadium including stuffed crust pizza, chicken fingers and fries, funnel cakes, onion rings, potato pancakes, Dippin' Dots Ice cream, and many more.
With a new look, the rest of Lackawanna County is eager to get on board and promote their event hand in hand with upcoming Yankees games. The Electric City Trolley Tour, which is located in Scranton, has a deal to take baseball fans to the stadium via an old style trolley. During the ride, up to 50 passengers can enjoy a 20 minute journey to PNC Field through Scranton's Laurel Line Crown Avenue Tunnel. Tickets for this experience only cost $15 and come with a Yankees hat. The rides will run every Sunday until August 19.
On July 28th, the ALS Association will continue their annual fundraising event which was started when the team was known as the Red Barons. Baseball fans can come to PNC Field to meet their favorite Yankees and bid on baseball items in silent and live auctions. The event is going into its seventh year and has so far raised $240,000 for ASL treatments and research.
All general parking at PNC Field is free and preferred passes are available to Yankees season ticket holders. To learn more about PNC Field or purchase tickets for upcoming events, contact the box office at 570-969-2255.
