Pneumonia and What Can Be Done to Treat it and Prevent It

Pat Anthony
Pneumonia can happen suddenly with patients not realizing what they have or how to treat it. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lungs. It can occur in one lung or both. This is what killed Brittany Murphy.

Pneumonia can be caused by an infection. It can be due to bacteria, a virus, or irritants that a person has inhaled. Typically a person with pneumonia will have a fever, a cough and possibly chills.

Anyone who suspects they have pneumonia should seek medical help immediately. Pneumonia is not something that can be treated with a home remedy. However, pneumonia can kill a person in a short time if left untreated. It was stated by Brittany Murphy's physician that the death would have been prevented if Brittany had received medical attention when she became ill.

While most patients will have a high fever with coughing, some will not experience what they consider to be typical symptoms. However, they may feel tired, have muscle pain and headaches, or feel short of breath.

Even a seasoned physician may order chest x-rays as well as sputum samples and blood tests before diagnosing pneumonia. However, you may be given medication before all test results are available.

There are many instances where a physician will insist a patient diagnosed with pneumonia be hospitalized. Those with pneumonia will often say they feel like they are drowning, and in a sense they may be.

Treatment for pneumonia varies according to the type diagnosed. Broad spectrum antibiotics or erythromycin may be prescribed. Instructions from a physician to stay at home and rest should be taken very seriously.

Preventing pneumonia with vaccinations is possible. Vaccinations are offered through many health clinics. However, not everyone thinks pneumonia is a concern for them.

Pneumonia is a leading cause of death in children in the United States. Approximately 60,000 people die of pneumonia each year in the United States alone.
