Pocket Scarf

Some scarves are knitted or crocheted, and look and feel warm and cozy. Others are made of fabric and have a chic appearance. Yet another type of scarf is a purse, too. When you make a pocket scarf you can carry a cell phone, credit cards, keys, cash and more, inside the scarf. You'll never have to carry a purse when you're wearing the pocket scarf and you'll find it very easy to make. Since you'll need only a straight stitch to make it, even beginners will find it a simple sewing task.

There are different scarves you can make, depending on what fabrics you choose, and how you combine them. Create a stylish design when you use cotton fabric on the outside, and satin on the inside of the scarf. But you'll make a wooly version by using fleece on the outside and cotton on the inside. Whatever fabrics you choose make sure that they are not stretchy.

You'll need about a half-yard of the outside fabric, and the same amount of the liner fabric. Cut a piece of fabric to be about six inches wide, and as long as you want for the scarf. The piece can stay six inches, from one end to the other, or it can flare out at the bottom. The design is up to you but, if you flare the bottom, you'll have more room for larger pockets. Cut the top and liner piece to be exactly the same.

On the right side of the liner fabric, at one end, make the pockets. Cut simplistic rectangles from the same cloth as the scarf liner. Fold them like pockets then sew them to the front of that cloth piece. You can do this at one end of the scarf liner, or at both ends. After sewing on one pocket, lay the next pocket on that one, so that you cover it halfway. Do the same to the next pocket, and any more you want.

Stack the front and bottom piece of cloth so that their right sides face each other. Sew down one long side, across one short side, and down the other long side. Turn the arrangement right side out and press. Pin and sew the opening shut.

The scarf is a true fashion statement and offers a handy element with the pockets. Add just one pocket, or several, then store anything you would normally carry in your purse, from a compact, to a chap stick, to cash.
