Poem: Beautiful Illusion

Since You and Me Became We

H. Kris Thomas
I'm caught between loving you and hating you
You're the pain in my head
The soreness between my shoulder blades
The knot that tears me apart in my middle
And the fatuous tales I tell always land you on me
With your hard words and your soft tones
Telling me that I'm some liar
That the fear I breed inside me is some hellish commodity
That I trade and exchange within
With little hesitancy
Certain that the quiet reality of us
Is some beautiful façade
A shining artifice
A cruel illusion
Bound to leave and tear away my insides
Bound to kill the soul that I've been growing
Since you and me became we
