Poem: Suffocation

John Gugie
helplessness leads to hopelessness
we live believing we control fate
when control is lost, so are we
in the suffocation of life
between constricting walls
seemingly important things no longer matter
basic life sustenance takes precedence
the pain of powerlessness builds
into a crescendo of agony
that feels unbearable and never ending
making one want to scream
or sleep and never awaken from a dream

the ties that bind to earth are frail
gone in the blink of an eye
yet we cling to it with all our might
believing, hoping, trusting
what others say about the afterlife
endlessly betting on blind faith
just die and see without guessing
no one who crossed over has returned
a one way trip to an unknown destination
find comfort in the shared journey
that all men partake at their end
take solace that you are not alone
