Poems for My Grandchildren

Jill Davidson
Ashley, little Ashley,
Cried and whined all day.
Drove her grandma round the bend,
And mother ran away.

Zacky, little Zacky,
Threw an awful fit.
Grandma got the padde,
And now he cannot sit.

Alex, little Alex,
Gives orders like a queen.
Impossible the live with
Now that she's thirteen.

Ashley's poem was inspired by a verse by Mary Mapes Dodge. I repeated my version to Ashley during one of her melodramatic moments, which happen about every five minutes. She characteristically stormed out of the room, but stopped fussing and came back a few minutes later to ask me to say it again. Then she asked for verses about her older brother and sister, too. Of course, each child thinks that their own verse is quite offensive, but that the other two are hilarious!

Well, Saul, if we don't laugh, we might cry, and laughing is a lot more fun.
