Poems for Peace - the Call

Capability to End Hostility

Linda Ann Nickerson

"Peace hath higher tests of manhood,
than battle ever knew."

John Greenleaf Whittier
(1807 - 1892)

Conflicts rock this tiny sphere;
Man harms man, with rage severe.
When will battles disappear?
Can we find a peace sincere?

In a lonely village lost,
Tiny children pay the cost.
Men and boys are double-crossed,
And tranquility is tossed.

On a crowded city street,
Lovely daughters, sold as meat,
As a neighbor plots deceit.
Will we all admit defeat?

Still we blink and roll the dice,
Seeking peace at any price.
Where will we seek sage advice?
Can we find accord precise?

In a secret, hidden place,
Hides a tiny charming face,
Scraped from life and its embrace.
How can we this guilt erase?

At a table, set for five,
Sobs a woman, just alive.
Too late for her love's revive,
All she wants is to survive.

When will strivings come to cease?
When will longings find release?
If compassion might increase,
Then we'd find a piece of peace.

Might there be a greater good,
For the most misunderstood?
Treaties made of rotten wood,
Never last, as if they could!

Who can end this age-old brawl,
Saving us from fiery fall?
What free agent can we call,
But the One who gave His all?

Absolutely wonderful. A young man I have known since he was born is scheduled to go to Iraq next month. Please keep him in your prayers, as well as all our other young men and women who are serving our country.

Thought provoking, though a bit of a disheartening reminder of how fallible and fragile our society is.

Beautiful, thought provoking poem. Yes, to the One that gave it....that is the only one who can grant us peace and happiness beyond measure.

It is too bad there has to be conflict of any kind. Guess you could say it is a fact of life, because everyone doesnt think the same, but is still a shame. Good Job Miss Linda.ken
