Poetic Lives Are Better

Two Poems on Life and Its Trials

Chad R. Herman
Above it all

A single ribbon dissects
the earth, red radiates
from the horizon and
dissolves into the blackness of
the ocean below. Above

a band of blue, first light, then slowly
becoming royal, and finally a coupling
with the blackness, giving birth to the
tantalizing gems and mythological creatures.

Below me twinkles with lights of
cities, cars, and little boys
and girls running from here to there
in the desperate pursuit of play
and fun. Above them all,

I watch everything dissolve under
a bed of white down.

Life is getting better all the time

A view, a woman winding down the street.
Her dress in rags and her face bloodied.
She spoke softly one single sentence.
You know i don't believe her,
She said,
Life is getting better all the time.

Rain poured onto the street.
There, what do you think I see?
A parade's comin' down the way,
The sun's let out it's first ray.
The dark clouds have blown by,
and all i see is blue sky.
She might be right,
Life is getting better all the time.

The grass is as serene as a dove,
laying here with only wine and my love.
I can't think of anything better,
just us here together.
Yes it's true what they say,
Life is getting better all the time.
