Poetry of the American Soul: The Wild Stallion

Amanda R. Dollak

Such beauty, such rhythm, such grace,

Such power at a steady pace!

Muscles glistening in the sun

As body and legs work as one.

Nostrils flaring at each deep breath;

Body and legs as dark as death.

Mane and tail the shade of night's black;

Eyes opened wide and ears thrown back.

Its dark hooves barely touch the ground

As the red canyon echoes each sound.

Circling hawk in the clear sky-

It sends down a long, piercing cry.

A red dust cloud is trailing behind

As in between rocks the dark hooves wind.

With the scorching sun sinking in the sky,

The dark hooves continue to fly.

Shadows growing longer all around,

But still the tireless hooves resound.

Sun about to set for the day

And rainbow sky fading to gray;

Yet, it never once loses its pace.

Oh, such beauty, such rhythm, such grace!

Glorious sky turning darker still-

The sun's now set behind a hill;

But at the final glances of the day,

The hooves race on without delay.

    This is an exceptional tribute to the mustangs who try to remain free.
