Poetry Markets for Today's Poet

Poetry is generally the hardest markets to crack. If you are a poet, you have already learned this the hard way. Generally more self published books are from poets, just to avoid the intense uphill road. If you are a poet, and would like some avenues to explore for publication, these markets do buy poems and may give you the chance your words deserve.

The ThreePenny Review is 100% freelance written, a huge plus for writers. They will pay on acceptance, give a byline, and will buy first North America serial rights. Poets need to adhere to traditional or free verse way of writing. You can submit up to five poems at a time and they pay $100 per poem. Rattapallax is only 10% freelance written, so the market is a bit tight. They pay on publication, give byline, and buys first North American serial rights. Poets can write in the styles of free verse, traditional, or avant-garde. You can submit up to 5 poems at a time and they pay $100 per poem. The North American Review is 90% freelance written. They pay on publication, give you a byline, and buys first North American serial rights. They have no restrictions on their poetry, but prefer a high quality product. They pay $1 a line, with a $20 min $100 max. The North American Review's contact person is Grant Tracey, its editor.

Talebones is 100% freelance written. They pay before publication, give writers their byline, and buys first North American serial and electronic rights. The publication prefers avant-garde, free verse, light verse, and traditional poetry. They buy only 5-8 poems a year and you may submit in batches of 8. They pay $10 a poem. Visions International is 95% freelance written. They pay on publication, give writers their byline, and buy first North American serial rights. The journal prefers avant-garde, free verse, traditional, and poetry that has been translated into English. They buy 110 poems a year, and you may submit 3-6 poems in a batch.
