Poetry Month Daily Challenge: Poems from Bordeaux

The College Years Series

Sandra Essary
I have recently rediscovered some of my poems, many that were written some 37 years ago at the age of 20 while studying at the University in Bordeaux, France. I am going to start publishing some of them here at Associated Content. Here is the first one.

Do Not Mourn
1 dec 1971

When you look to dress yourself in black,
drawing away
to reacquaint yourself to mourn,
because I have gone
in mind
or body
or spirit,
all three or more;
When all that there is of me
are the cold, unmoving images
taken on summer days in Monterey,
or my voice on the air of your room,
locked forever in its word rhythms -

Then look to the hills -
do not wash away
all the mountains we faltered upon
in the one tear too many
that becomes
opium;

remember the reasons we never ceased wanting
the little-traveled heights,
or a sunset in orange,
engulfing our worlds.

Conquer the heights without me
so all can say;
that the rocks that gathered our blood -
did not win, nor
did they
embalm our souls.

    Wow is right. This is fantastic. The images flow together so freely. Loved it!

    Wow. And wow. I'm stunned by some of these images. You've been a writer forever, Sandra. Just stopped & read this again. I'm staggering under the profound insight & colors of your words. I can't seem to shake the echo of your summation in "nor did they embalm our souls". I have to cry now.

    I think that perhaps we forget how deep we were when we were all younger.
