Poetry and Pieces

Old Poems and Fragments of Poems, Written for My Wife, Decades Ago

Brad Sylvester
Of all the things I've written, publishing these scares me the most, perhaps because I care about these words more than any others...
--
Words are the clay with which poets sculpt moods.
--
My Masterpiece

Writers care not so much for their words,
As I for each of your smiles.
Nor do they labor more painstakingly,
Than I to bring each one to life.
They give substance to your happiness,
And show me how happy you are
That I care enough to create them for you.
--
We are joined by a golden chain of just two links,
One around your finger, one around mine.
So strong is this chain which binds us,
That it can never be cloven,
Even with the sharpest cut.
Nor can time or distance separate
The linkage between our hearts.
--
There is nothing so distant as a memory,
And nothing so near.
So far away that you can never be there again,
Yet so close that you can never leave it behind.
--
I sleep only for the dreams of you.
--
I sometimes think she frowns
Only because she knows I'll chase it away with a kiss.
I don't mind if she manipulates me that way;
No other puppet is paid so well.
--
Your ears most resemble delicate pink roses.
Silvery earrings hang upon them like dewdrops.
But your ears are better for they have no thorns.
At even the slightest whispered compliment,
Their vibrant color spreads to your cheeks,
Causing the most delicate flower of all, your smile,
To blossom in the summer warmth of your happiness.
--
Holy Trinity

Our love is a tangible presence,
Like a third person, and invisible guardian
Created from the spirits of of both of us.
No matter how distant you and I must be,
We are never alone while we yet love.
For that part of the other
Which is embodied in the avatar of our love
Is always with each of us,
Bridging any distance, however great,
That lies between you and me.
It watches over us in our separation,
Protecting our hearts from harm or sorrow.
You and I, in our love,
Are as secure as if held
In the arms of Three-Personned God.
Perhaps that presence that I name the Avatar of our Love
Is His presence,
His benediction for the two of us,
Joined in the holiest of communions.
--
Note: I had just read all of John Donne's poetry that I could find when I wrote Holy Trinity, my apologies to him, for borrowing his "Three-Person'd God."

This is beautiful Brad. You are very gifted and what a lucky lady your wife is to have a husband that romances her with his very own poetry.
