Poetry or Science

JUSTIN REID
Poetry or science? One is a representative of human creativity and the other a representative of human ingenuity. The former deals with the emotions and imagination the latter deals with fact and immutable laws that rule the physical world.

Both can teach us valuable lessons about life. Science teaches the facts and answers questions regarding the world as we know it. Poetry attempts to explain the things that science does not touch upon. Science tells me that the human heart is the size of my fist but why does it feel like so much more than that when I read epic poetry or delve into one of Shakespeare's fascinating plays?

Science is great for knowing what is and isn't possible in nature but what happens when you have a question regarding your imagination or your thoughts on spirituality? Then you turn to others that can relate or you venture into a new area of thought. In our western culture there are some that stand out in history as being very influential in the way we think today. Many great ideas are still great even a thousand years later. I find that all the universal questions I ask myself have already been discussed or exhibited in the writings of many ancient authors. Poetry deals with life what we all go through in life. Thus poets and authors are teachers of life. Poets communicate their knowledge, whether good or bad, for us to glean what we can from it and perhaps come to a better understanding of our own existence.
