Poise Extra Coverage Pantiliners Versus Serenity Slender Thins Bladder Protection Pads

Aimee E
For many women who suffer from bladder loss, thin pads are a great way to stay dry. Both Poise and Serenity make different types of bladder protection pads, which are intended to work in the same way. Poise pads are manufactured by Kimberly-Clark, and Serenity pads are manufactured by SCA Personal Care. They come individually wrapped and are non-flushable. However, which ones really are better at keeping a person dry? After testing both brands of pads, there was a clear-cut winner. Here is how Poise and Serenity compare when tested with bladder leakage:

Poise - Tested for Poise were the Poise Extra Coverage Pantiliners, which are the thinnest pad Poise manufactures. These pads come twenty-four to a pack, and cost around three dollars per pack. They are long, but they also come in regular. The size, regular or long, depends on what size underwear a person wears. Poise pads do a fair job of keeping a person dry throughout the day. While wearing them, I felt no discomfort from wetness, although I had discomfort for other reasons. After wearing them for a few hours, the pad started bunching up in the middle of my underwear, which made me uncomfortable and worried about coverage. I was also worried when I checked the pad at various intervals during the day and noticed it falling apart. The pad started separating at the bottom, and by the end of the day, it was not very reliable.

Another problem area was wetness and absorbency. I felt the pad was not able to contain the mild leakage and this resulted in my worst fear, an unpleasant odor. The package is clearly labeled as "worry free odor control," but unfortunately the Poise pads did not live up to that promise. The pads do have a blue absorbency strip that is visible, however, on almost all of my pads, the visible strip was not lined up evenly down the middle of the pad. This caused an uneven distribution of wetness on both sides of the pad, which ultimately lead to the pad's unraveling and falling apart. As I tested the entire package of Poise, I still kept having the same issues.

Serenity - The Serenity pads were definitely better performers than the Poise pads. Serenity's slender pads come thirty to a pack, and cost a bit more at around five dollars per pack. The difference though, is like night and day. When testing the Serenity pads, I purchased the thinnest pads available, as I only need light bladder control.

Upon taking the Serenity pad out of the wrapper, I noticed it is approximately three to four times as thick as the Poise pad. It also had a soft, cotton-like cover. While not as thick as a maxi pad, the Serenity pad looked like it was very absorbent for bladder leakage. After a few hours, the pad held up very well. I was kept dry and the pad looked like it was practically unused. There was no bunching, unraveling, or unpleasant odor. At the end of the day, the Serenity pad held up well, and exceeded my expectations. The only unfortunate side to Serenity is that the products tend to be a bit on the high end spectrum of the pricing scale. However, in situations like this, due to Serenity's reliability and effective protection, I can see paying a few dollars more for peace of mind.

If at all possible, consider purchasing the Serenity Ultra Thin Slender Pads the next time you are in the market for light bladder protection. While they are not the lowest priced, they are very effective when you are looking for discreet bladder protection without wetness and odor.
