Poke contests were introduced in Ruby and Sapphire versions I do believe. These contests gave the game a brand new reason to play after getting all eight badges and catching 'em all. You could train your Pokemon to be the coolest, smartest, toughest, cutest, or most beautiful. Not only could you win prizes in the game but you could compete with your friends for local bragging rights. You could also grow berries to later create Pokeblocks. These little bits of candy would enhance one or multiple parts of a Pokemon's smartness, coolness and so on.
Single battles were the standard way of beating the pulp out of your opponent. Sending one Pokemon after another to take the win. But a new and incredible idea hatched in, again, Ruby and Sapphire version, the double battle. Most people I know don't like this idea because its more difficult. I personally think it adds a new form of strategy and Pokemon breeding aspect to the game. Each Pokemon has their strength and weakness, but two Pokemon together can easily overcome this problem. Setting a single Pokemon team took a while, but double battle training was a challenge. I'm not saying this changed the whole game engine, but it added a new way to play and enjoy the game.
Secret bases were the most favorite part I think of Ruby and Sapphire versions. You could hide anywhere in the game. how awesome is it to hide your own custom base with your own personal stuff inside. although it was nothing spectacular it was just plain fun.
All these things were amazing and fun in the game, but what about with friends. Well it was fun but all the cables needed made linking together not user friendly. This was the biggest downside to the game platform. Now imagine all the things above and more with WiFi compatibility. You can play with a local LAN or worldwide on line trading system and more. All the specifics are too much to cover in this article but everything is wireless. You can battle single or double battles with up to four people. The underground ruins allow you to set up a secret base and dig up spheres and other goods to purchase items for your secret base. Pokemon contests now have three different parts to compete in. Trading can be done with a LAN or Wireless worldwide trading center.
