The title "Pokemon" is derived from the term, Pocket Monsters. From its humble beginnings of a handheld role-playing game, Pokemon has become a blockbuster multimedia brand that has made Nintendo countless cash throughout the years..
The Nintendo franchise started with Pokemon Red and Blue on the Game Boy in 1997. The object in this role-playing game is to collect creatures called Pokemons and use them to fight others. There are hundreds of these creatures to collect, battle and trade. The two versions have slight differences like unique Pokemons. Because of that, many gamers bought both Red and Blue.
Despite being released late into the lifespan of the Game Boy, Pokemon Red and Blue became two of the best-selling games ever. In fact, Nintendo decided to release two more editions: Green Yellow. In addition to video games, the Pokemon franchise expanded to a movie, televisions show, trading card game and other entertainment mediums.
Eventually, the first generation of Pokemon game would be remade. Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen were released for the Game Boy Advance in 2004. In addition to enhance graphics, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen also include streamlined gameplay and new content.
Another remake is in the works for the Pokemon franchise. This time, it involves the second-generation: Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal. Among the new elements added to the original titles includes a new clock system, the ability to breed Pokemons in addition to new areas, items and Pokemons. Just like the prequels, Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal became best-selling titles. While the series has evolved since, the second-generation is still special for many Pokemon fans.
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver bring the Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal games into a new generation. Just like Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, the Nintendo DS remake will have enhance graphics thanks to the new technology. Players should also expect Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver to take advantage of the touch interface of the Nintendo DS. Furthermore, the upcoming games support the PokeWalker, which measures each step you take in real life. It then converts these steps into experience points for your Pokemon.
Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver will be released this fall on the Nintendo DS in Japan. While Nintendo could have release it in North America in the holiday season, they chose to give the spotlight to The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks instead. Even with the 2010 release, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver will end up being of the best-selling games on the Nintendo DS when it is all said and done.
