Poker Hand Nicknames

When playing poker, you may hear some terminology being thrown around the table. If you are looking for an advantage, knowing these slang terms may be able to advance your game. Here are a couple nicknames given to hands that are not starting hands but can be found at ending hands.

Three of a kind - If you have a three of a kind using a pocket pair, you are said to have a set. If you use two cards that are down on the board, you are said to have trips.

Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 - This hand is called Broadway. Even though most commonly refer it as an ace high straight, you may also hear this nickname.

Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5 - This, also known as an ace-low straight, can also be called a wheel.

King, King, King - Whenever you have three kings, it called 'Three Wise Men'. This nickname is obvious- it is a reference to the three wise men.

Ten, Ten, Ten - When you have trip tens, it is called Thirty Miles of Bad Road. This is a reference to Gilroy to San Jose.

Queen, Queen, King, King - Whenever you have two kings and two queens, it is called the Mommas and Poppas. This is a reference to the band, which consisted of two males and two females.

Ace, King, 4, 7 - This hand is called Assault Rifle, after the Russian machine gun. The name of it can easily be seen when considering the abbreviation for each card combined with the other cards (AK47).

2, 2, 2 - Whenever you have trip 2's, you have a hand that's called Huey, Dewey, and Louie, in reference to Donald Ducks nephews. This nickname was created for this hand because the number two looks like ducks. (When you have a starting hand of 2-2, your hand is called 'Sitting Ducks'.

Unbeatable Hand - When you have a hand that is impossible to be beaten, you are considered to have the 'nuts'. The terminology came from when in the colonial days and gambling occurred, a man would bet his wagon nuts because he knew that there was no way he could be beaten.

Paint - Whenever you make a reference to a card that is a face card, you are referring to a paint card. This is because a face card is smothered with color while a number card is filled with color.

Club Flush- Whenever you have a flush that is made up of all clubs, you are considered to have a golf bag. This is because all you have in your hand a bunch of clubs.
