No matter what kind of No Limit Texas Holdem', whether it be a tournament or cash game, the conservative player doesn't change their game too much. The idea is to approach hands and find ways to create the best odds in your favor with premium hands. There is not really a definitive way for everyone to profit using this style, so find the best suit for your game and turn that strategy into an art. Master your own art and it will reflect your own personality, but I guarantee the conservative roots will always be there showing very clearly. Hand ranking will dictate more often the way you'll play a hand consveratively rather than action taken before you take action. To some extent the previous action will matter, for example when there is a raise and then a reraise, it will make you reach higher along the hand rankings for hands in the top five starting hands especially in a cash game. In a tournament depending where you act this situation would only leave room for starting hands like AK suited, Pocket AA, or Pocket KK. Cash games could leave you doing much different with some of the top ten hands depending on the raiser and your bankroll at the moment. Races are more common in cash games and can be profitable on a good day. But even in cash games, the conservative player will avoid lower pockets with many callers behind because pockets against three or four hands are highly unfavored to scoop the pot.
Conservative players in tournaments will be focused solely on cashing first and survival. This is effective for profiting. Tournaments are really a game of survival anyway, so conservative players control their bankrolls better in tournaments than cash games where aggressive players who can afford the losses really can thrive on conservative tables. Conservative players are still trying to find way to get their best odds for their money no matter the game however. They aren't likely to draw as much, but rather attack drawing players.
The most important thing is to remember to have fun with your style, Holdem' is entertainment first before serious. Your style will normally reflect your person, but some people are completely opposite in their styles and personalities. Its good to find ways to show yourself you can be on the opposite end of the spectrum at some times, and poker is perfect for this. Having a strategy, sticking to it, and learning every time you play is the best way to find success in poker.
