This crochet pattern works up quickly to create a 30" square blanket with 6" polar bear teddy "buddy" attached. Mix and match your yarn colors to change the polar bear into a regular teddy bear, or lengthen the ears to make a bunny.
Polar Bear Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern
Materials:
*Caron Simply Soft No Dye Lot Yarn - White (8 oz.), Pink (5 oz.)
*Size G/6 4.75 mm hook
*Small amount polyester fiberfill
Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
Sc = Single Crochet
Dc = Double Crochet
Sl st = Slip stitch
Teddy Head (make 2):
Round 1: With white, ch 2. Work 9 sc in the 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same stitch, *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Rounds 3-4: Ch 1, sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Rounds 5-7: Ch 1, sc in next sc, *2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 8: Ch 1, sc in next sc and in each sc around. Join with sl st to first sc. Important: Mark the 4th, 13th, 40th, and 49th stitches.
Finish off and weave in ends.
Ears:
For front, use pink. For back, use white. Attach to any marked stitch.
Row 1: Ch 1; working towards next marked stitch, sc in same stitch and in each of the next 9 stitches.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn; *sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch. Repeat from * across.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn; sc in next stitch and in each stitch across.
Row 4: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of the next 2 stitches, (dec over the next 2 stitches) 5 times, sc in each remaining stitch across.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn; sc in each of the next 2 stitches, (dec over the next 2 stitches) 3 times, sc in each remaining stitch across.
Row 6: Ch 1, turn; skip first sc, sc in next sc and in each across to the last 2. Skip next sc, sc in last sc.
Finish off and weave in ends. Repeat for opposite ear.
Edging:
Join white with a sl st to any st. Ch 1, work sc in next stitch and in each st around head and ears. Finish off and weave in ends.
Face:
Satin stitch nose over hole made by starting circle. Optionally, satin stitch 2 eyes above the nose.
Finishing:
With right sides together, match stitches and stitch front to back, leaving a small hole for stuffing at the neck. Turn right-side out, stuff tightly with fiberfill. Close hole by stitching through back loops.
Blanket
With white, ch 92 loosely.
Row 1: (Right side) Dc in fourth ch from the hook, skip next ch, sc in next ch. *Skip next ch, 3 dc in next ch, sc in next ch; repeat from *across to last 2 chains, skip next ch, 2 dc in last ch.
Row 2: Ch 1, turn; sc in first dc, skip next dc, 3 dc in next sc, *skip next dc, sc in next dc, skip next dc, 3 dc in next sc; repeat from * across to last 2 stitches, skip next dc, sc in top of turning ch.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn; dc in first sc, skip next dc, sc in next dc, *skip next dc, 3 dc in next sc, skip next dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * across to last 2 stitches, skip next dc, 2 dc in last sc.
Rows 4-50 (approximately): Repeat rows 2 & 3 until square measures 28".
Finish off, weave in ends.
Edging:
Round 1: Join pink to any corner. Ch 1, sc in next st and in each across to the next corner, *(Sc, ch 1, sc) in corner, sc in next stitch and in each across to next corner. Repeat from * to beginning chain 1. Work sc, ch 1 in same corner as joining, join with sl st to beginning chain 1.
Round 2: Ch 3, *Skip next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch across to next corner. Dc in first sc of corner, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch 1 space, dc in next sc and in each across to the next corner. Repeat from * to beginning chain 3. Work dc, ch 1 in same corner ch 1 space, join with sl st to beginning ch 3.
Finish off, weave in ends.
Finishing:
Fold one corner of the blanket 4 1/2" from the edge. Align bottom of bear's ears with the fold. Using white yarn and yarn needle, tack head in place. Tie off, weave in ends.
