Polarizing Contestant Makes Wise Decision to Quit 'The Glee Project'

COMMENTARY | "The Glee Project" took an unexpected turn when a polarizing contestant decided to call it quits.

This week's theme was "Sexuality." For the homework assignment, contestants performed Madonna's "Like a Virgin." Samuel won the task because he was "equal opportunity" sexy, able to flirt onscreen with both boys and girls.

As a reward, Samuel earned a mentoring session with Mark Salling and Ashley Fink. I'm sure Marissa would have given Samuel a run for his money this week. I'm still bitter about her unceremonious elimination.

For the group number, contestants performed Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream."

Damian and Lindsay portrayed a football player and cheerleader. Lindsay decided to heat things up by kissing Damian. Hannah probably wished she could change places with Lindsay.

Cameron and Hannah portrayed a flirty food fight. "Christian" Cameron struggled because he was unwilling to "compromise his morals" by kissing her.

Samuel consolidated his win by giving a convincing performance with Alex. Although Samuel is not gay, he (unlike Cameron) understands that there is a difference between acting and real life.

Alex and Cameron, to nobody's surprise, landed in the bottom 3. Damian landed in the bottom despite showing the most growth in the competition.

While Damian has been strong these last few weeks, he (like Marissa last week) picked the wrong time to have a bad day. Unfortunately for him, he was stuck with a sleepy arrangement of "Danny Boy." Although he didn't connect to the song, Ryan Murphy told him to "fake it."

Alex and Cameron were given songs that showcased their tremendous strengths (which is why they've been able to save themselves in the bottom 3 week after week). Alex performed Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive." The judges were impressed, but Ryan pointed out that we needed to see a different side of Alex (other than diva).

Cameron gave an emotional performance of "Blackbird" which the judges loved. Ryan asked about Cameron's unwillingness to kiss girls onscreen. Cameron had no regrets about his decision because he felt that he needed to be true to himself. He also felt that other contestants were more deserving of a spot on "Glee" because they were willing to do things he wasn't.

Ryan later asked Cameron if he would consider staying. He admired Cameron's convictions and felt that he could inspire people. He even expressed willingness to work within his boundaries.

In the end, Cameron decided to turn down the opportunity of a lifetime. While I would not have made that decision myself, it was the right choice for him.

Of all the contestants, Cameron Mitchell arguably has the most star power. Yet acting and "Glee" may not be for him. He will have a successful career as a singer and performer.

As Cameron explained in his blog, "I'll always stick to my guns and you should too. You will learn things about yourself that you never knew was possible"
