Police: The Abuse of Power

Richard Block
I am a reasonable person, and I have lived and worked in South Florida for the past 11 years. I try and do the right things, like pay my taxes, vote, donate to causes I think are worthy. Recently my home was broken into, it was a stunt by kids (all in there 20's) who were having a party next door. I called the police like a responsible citizen, they caught them very quickly. I identified them and the police didn't arrest them....Now wait a minute, the police didn't arrest them.

That's right no explanation given to me as to why not, further the police found drugs and drug related paraphernalia on them when they were caught. Now they damaged some of my property when they broke in so I filed a civil suit. Now here is where it gets just plain wrong. The day they (the kids who broke into my home) received proper notice of civil action they file a police report claiming I threatened them with a handgun, a handgun I don't own and on a day I wasn't home and they waited almost a month to file the complaint claiming it happened the day after the break in.

Now the police being what they are came to my home and a police officer named Tuberville told me my home hadn't been broken into and that no report of it existed. I was searched and warned that I would be arrested if I threatened them again.

Now I took issue with this, I filed a complaint like a good law abiding citizen should and as a result of this complaint, two narcotics officers came to my home, lied to me in order to enter my home and informed me that Officer Tuberville reported the smell of pot coming from my home when they had been there 3 weeks prior and they wanted to search my home for drugs without a warrant.

This is wrong in every respect, this was clearly a personal attack against myself for filing a complaint against the officer. I filed another complaint with the police department and even contacted the FBI. I eventually received a written apology from the local police department for the events that occurred.

I began to research complaints like this throughout the country and was dismayed and shocked to discover these kind of abuses by police are in fact rampant. Some are so severe that they result in criminal charges being filed against the police officers involved.

Every time a police officers lies under oath (the most common and frequent abuse of the legal system) or falsifies a police report, he not only commits a crime but he demeans the very system of laws he is sworn to uphold. Every time a police officer hits a suspect out of anger or because they can, they fail in their obligation to protect those they are sworn serve.

The norm today isn't a news story about police doing the right thing it is a story in which a police officer appears to execute a handcuffed young black man, or taser a man to death because they cant speak the same language. A badge does not give a police officer the right to break the laws they are sworn to uphold.

These are dangerous precedents and should be stopped before its allowed to grow into a pandemic. WE THE PEOPLE make the laws, and determine who enforces those laws. If police themselves become danger to the community its sworn to protect then it time for the people to remove this threat thru our legal system.

Excellent article. I believe this type of abuse of power is on the rise. I've also read that many metro police departments are hiring even more police. My fear, perhaps I'm paranoid, is that at some point the Federal government will declare 'Martial Law' and then the abuse will get even worse. Even as it is now, with the Homeland Security 'laws', any of us can be 'disappeared', just like we read about happening in foreign countries. Of course it isn't paranoia if there really are monsters hiding in the shadows!
