Police Academy Self Sponsorship

Police academy self sponsorship is the process of putting oneself through a police academy rather than being put through by a law enforcement agency. When a person applies for a job as a sworn law enforcement officer, attendance of a police academy is generally required. Exceptions can be made for police officers transferring from one jurisdiction to another, but entry level police officers are required to attend an academy.

When a person applies for a job as a police officer, an application process is completed before the candidate is allowed to attend a police academy. The agency hiring the candidate pays for the candidate's time, equipment, etc. A self sponsored student of a police academy pays for everything out of pocket. The expenses involved with self sponsorship leave many wondering why anybody would consider such an endeavor, but benefits to the program do exist.

Self sponsored police academy students are able to sell the fact that they have already attended basic police training to agencies they will be applying for. These candidates stick out to recruiters and department leadership because it saves the department the time and money of sending the potential officer through the academy.

Another benefit to self sponsorship is that the graduate of the academy is usually given anywhere between one and two years, depending on the jurisdiction, before their certification will lapse. This means that the self sponsored graduate can put off applying for a law enforcement agency to finish up school, decide if a career in law enforcement is for them, work out any child care issues, etc.

A lot of times, academies which accept self sponsoring students will allow police agencies to send representatives to the academy to meet the self sponsored students and attempt to recruit them into their agencies.

While self sponsorship into a police academy is one option to those considering a career in law enforcement, many states do not allow academy students to sponsor themselves. In these states, the student must have been hired by a law enforcement agency to attend the academy.

Self sponsored students and agency sponsored students are treated the same, attend the same courses, and experience the same stress levels which come from the police academy experience. The only way that a self sponsored student may be identified as such is by the uniform he or she may be wearing. Depending on the academy, if a student is required to wear a uniform mandated by his or her department, then the self sponsored students will most likely be wearing some form of generic uniform with no agency patches or insignia. Other police academies may require students to wear uniforms issued by the academy themselves, so there would be no way of telling self sponsored students from their agency sponsored counterparts.
