Police Brutality Protest to be Held in NYC

Kobina Wright
On Wednesday, December 6th, a 15-year-old human rights organization called The December 12th Movement will lead a protest rally to "Resist Fascism and the Rise of the American Police State." The rally will take place at 4:30 PM at New York Police Department Headquarters; One Police Plaza, Downtown New York.

Even before the death of Sean Bell, the unarmed African-American killed on his wedding day at the hands of NYPD officers, New York community leaders had begun organizing a mass police protest rally after observing patterns of increased police harassment and brutality in the Black and Latino communities in the city.

Civil rights attorney, Roger Wareham stated, "This is not a celebrity driven event. The racist policy emanating from Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Chief of the Organized Crime Bureau, Anthony Izzo, must be stopped. It is systemic institutionalized racism."

According to Wareham, the organizers are demanding the resignation of both men and a change in police policy.

Noted comparisons of such reckless discharge and murders by New York City Police include Amadou Diallo, an unarmed 23-year-old African immigrant; Patrick Dorismon, an unarmed 26-year-old, Haitian American; Aswan Watson, an unarmed African American and Anthony Baez who was unarmed and choked to death by New York police officer Francis Livoti.

Some of the issues that will be addressed as part of the protest include police profiling of Black youth; NYPD occupation of the Black Community; police aggression, harassment and overkill; and the erosion of civil rights.

That was my brother Aswan Watson and the main reason they really got off is because my mother was receiveing crazy harrassing calls from probably them or their counterparts and felt her life would be in danger and didn't go along with the lawyers to pursue the case to convict them. I was in the military at the time and had to be stationed near her after it happened and she is still shook up from this to this date as well as me and his other sibling.

I am not sure what exactly happened either. But if it is true that Bell tried running over a cop, the cop has the right to use deadly force to protect himself and his comrades. Also, the police has to provide safety for the rest of the area, letting this man get away could have led to many more deaths at the hand of the crazed driver, running people over that were merely walking on the sidewalk. Fifty rounds is excessive, but in the heat of a gun fight I can understand that maybe you just keep going, you ensure you have come out on top. I was not personally there, but as a criminal justice major, this would be my point of view if I were a cop in that situation.

who said this man tried to run over this officer, the officer did and the only people that can say he's lying is dead and in intensive care. i don't know what happen but i know that those officers will say anything to feel they need to to save their behinds just like to cops in atlanta that gunned down that elderly woman and tried to justify it by saying she was selling drugs. Also according to cnn, police policy in ny does not allow a cop to use deadly force and put 50 rounds in someone because he's "attemping to get away".

I agree with Bob and Clementine. If you try to run over the police, expect them to defend themselves.

I felt bad for the guy, but then I read about how when confronted by an undercover officer, he freaked out and ran him down with his car, then hit a police vehicle as well. There have been problems with police, but this is not one of those cases.

EXCUSE ME!! Are you people blind??!!
A car was used as a wepon and RAMMED the police cars. THEY are at fault here. You play with police and you end up the loser, how is it the polices fault?
    Give me a break!
