Police Find Leg in Case of Missing North Carolina Girl
Prosthetic Leg Believed to Be Zahra Baker's Found
Authorities are trying to verify that the leg belongs to the missing North Carolina girl. Zahra Baker had lost her leg due to bone cancer and wore a prosthetic one. Zahra Baker was reported missing on October 9, 2010. The police very quickly decided that foul play was involved and stated that they did not believe that Zahra had been abducted.
The police currently have both the stepmother, Elisa Baker and the father, Adam Baker in custody on unrelated charges. The day Zahra was reported missing there was first a fire reported at the home. The police then arrived to find a ransom note on the family car, but the note did not pertain to the Baker's. The note was for Adam Baker's boss and claimed that the bosses daughter had been abducted. The police immediately check the home of Baker's boss to find that both he and his daughter were safe.
It was then concluded that Elisa Baker had created the ransom note to lead investigators off of the trail to Zahra. The police have since searched the place of employment of Adam Baker, the garbage dump and former residences of the family and Elisa Baker.
Zahra and her father were originally from Australia. About a year and a half ago, they moved to North Carolina and Adam and Elisa married. Since that time, friends and neighbors have describe Elisa as very harsh towards the beautiful 10 year old. Zahra did not attend school this year and Elisa began telling people she was home schooled although she was not registered to do so and neighbors said that they never saw any school work being done.
Friends and neighbors also believe that Zahra was physically abused by her stepmother and they turned her into social services, but obviously nothing was done before Zahra went missing.
The last time Zahra was seen was September 25, 2010, so authorities do not know exactly when she went missing. Her mother and family members in Australia are worried about her.
So far, the police have found two mattresses which they are testing for DNA evidence at the garbage dumps and now a prosthetic leg at the former residence of Elisa Baker. Any other evidence has been keep under wraps.
Finding a prosthetic leg is a big clue in the case because they are fairly uncommon, especially in the location near Elisa Baker's former residence.
