Police patches are usually an emblem in the shape of a shield, with intricate designs indicating the department name, logo, and the seal of the country, county or state. There are also patches that denote the name and number of the police officer. The rank stripes are patches added on with time as the officers are promoted. The design of police patches are meant to stand out with minimal color while giving a strong contrast against the uniform or other clothing it is stuck on. The striking view from the police patches is mainly due to the use of metallic threads. Physical activities required of a police officer also means, the police patches should be durable towards washing or can be removed before laundering. Most police patches are sold as iron-on or can be sewn-on as permanent patches. Temporary patches are made with Velcro backing so that it can be easily stuck on and removed when required. The price is slightly higher than ordinary patches because police patches are 100% embroidered using high quality thread and twills. The size of a normal emblem is about 3.5 inches in diameter or larger, depending on the intricacy of the design.
On the acceptance into a police academy for training, the trainee will be a proud wearer of police patches. As time passes, the patches change or more patches are added on. Police patches signify the unit the wearer belongs to and thus the job of the wearer. For example, K-9 will have their own insignia on their police patches which is different from narcotics division. All the proud wearers of police patches shoulder a heavy responsibility of protecting the common members of community from crime and violence. Police are easily identified by their uniform and their presence are seen everywhere. Sometimes, the mentallity of a police wearing police patches is so strong in the mind of the public, they forget that police are also human and they still walk among us. The lost of identity associated with retirement also leads to depression for some former police officers. Police patches and their uniform are something cherished for old memories sake and sometimes bring a sense of melanchonely when the former police gaze at the uniform and police patches which they will never wear again.
However, having police patches on their uniform doesn't mean that all these police officers are perfect. They are human being with basic instinct for survival too. That is why we often come across patches which symbolizes authority are often misused by people with bad intentions. Police might use the fear instigated by the sight of their police patches to illicit bribes. The public too can easily obtain police patches and disguise as a police officer to commit crimes. Most people know the shape of police patches but not the detailed design. So when a fake police officer came on them, they were too panicky to react and might just follow the poser's instructions. Custom embroided patches online should be an easy tool for police to purchase replacement police patches but the public can easily obtain patches by scrolling in the gallery. Easily obtained objects will lose their value somehow. This might explain why people are mistrusting police everywhere.
But the general public should be well aware that any activities being done online can be tracked and they can easily be traced. This is a technical issue and perhaps it would be compulsory for stricter regulation to be imposed when an order for police patches is being made online in the future.
