Police Test Mattress for DNA and Find Prosthetic Leg in Missing Zahra Baker Case
Leg Found in Bushes Next to Former Residence of Elisa Baker
Police have been on the case of the missing 10 year old since October 9, 2010 when a fire was reported in her backyard. Later that evening the police received a second 911 call from the Baker residence. This time is was Zahra's father, Adam Baker reporting that he had not seen his daughter since 2:30am. He claimed that he forgot to check on her earlier during the fire incident.
The police then learned that Zahra wore a prosthetic leg and two hearing aids due to bone cancer. They immediately issued an Amber alert. A short while later the investigation into the missing North Carolina girl changed when they found a ransom note on the family car. The ransom note was directed to Adam Baker's employer, Mr. Coffey. The note claimed that Mr. Coffey's daughter had been kidnapped.
The police rushed over to the Coffey residence to find that Mr. Coffey and his daughter were home and unharmed.
More information began to come in that Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, was not very nice to the beautiful cancer survivor. Friends and neighbors claim that they filed abuse complaints with the department of social services. Zahra had unexplained bruises and Elisa Baker had bruises that she claimed happened when she was hitting Zahra. Elisa even pulled Zahra out of public school and allegedly began to home school her even though she was never registered to do so and family and friends said no school work was done.
The story Elisa Baker, Zahra's stepmother, gave police did not make sense. They questioned her extensively until she admitted that she was behind the fake ransom note. Elisa Baker still claims that she did not have anything to do with Zahra's disappearance. Mrs. Baker was arrested on obstruction of justice charges. Later her bail was increased when authorities believed that she was a flight risk.
Police then began searching for Zahra. They made an announcement to the public that they did not believe that Zahra was kidnapped and that the public was not at risk. The searched the lumber company that Adam Baker, Zahra's father worked for. Then they searched a landfill and found two mattresses that they believe came out of the Baker home. They have begun DNA testing on the mattresses to see if there is a link to Zahra.
The police then arrested Adam Baker on check fraud and other charges not related to the disappearance of his daughter.
Investigators announced that they were searching former residences of Elisa Baker. Very quickly they found a prosthetic leg that was in the bushes near Elisa Baker's former home. The police are now trying to confirm if the prosthetic leg belonged to Zahra.
There is still no sign of the missing North Carolina girl, Zahra Baker, but at least the police are continuing to search and have found two mattresses and a prosthetic leg.
