Polished and Decorative Concrete: A Different Flooring Choice

Concrete Dull No Longer

Tara Dawn
When building or remodeling a home or office, concrete tends to be the last flooring choice that comes to mind. But this is because it has a reputation of being dull, gray, and drab. This doesn't have to be so. Polished and decorative concrete flooring are anything but dull, and can add great elegance to any home or business. Because it looks similar to natural stone, and because there are so many alterations you can make to it-such as staining, stamping, or epoxy coatings-decorative concrete is incredibly sophisticated, and can be entirely unique.

Decorative concrete is a broad term that encompasses a variety of different processes intended to enhance the look of standard poured concrete. As mentioned before, this can include polishing, staining, stamping, and epoxy coating. This is not an exhaustive list, however. The great thing is, however, that none of these processes have to break the budget. Compared to similar looking flooring, such as marble or terrazzo, concrete is pretty affordable. Especially in large areas such as warehouses, showrooms, or factories, where buying a large quantity of stone slabs can get incredibly expensive, polished or decorative concrete is a much more economical choice.

What other benefits do polished or decorative concrete floors offer? Aside from an elegant finish and price, these concrete floors can be very easy to clean, and last for a lifetime. Polished concrete has a smooth finish that is easily maintained and great for larger surfaces. For smaller areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms, or entryways to homes, stamped concrete is a unique and beautiful option. Regardless of the texture, color-altering decorative concrete processes are available. Acid staining has a very unique, and can be done in a variety of colors. It is also possible to paint concrete-which allows for a bit more control over the end result, and can be redone if mistakes occur.

You may be building a new home or facility, or you may be wondering what the best option is for your already established flooring. Decorative concrete is highly versatile. When deciding which facet you want to pursue, there are many factors to consider. If you are trying to improve energy efficiency, for example, you should opt for a polished finish that will reflect overhead lights. The same goes when choosing colors to stain or paint your decorative concrete floors. Lighter colors will improve energy efficiency. This is particularly important in a large area of a factory or showroom.

Regardless of whether you own a home or facility, consulting with a contractor is a good idea when weighing the options for your decorative concrete flooring. They will be able to point out factors you may not have considered previously, and pinpoint the best course of action for altering or pouring, going through with a particular decorative concrete alteration (such as polishing or staining), and then future maintenance. This will save you both money and headache in the long run.

Concrete doesn't have to be limited to the basement, and your floors don't have to be limited to costly stone or unattractive linoleum. Now that you know the endless possibilities, decorative concrete could be the perfect choice for your home or business facility.
