Political Halloween Costumes

Have Fun and Make a Statement!

Michelle K. Miller
As Halloween nears, those of us who celebrate the holiday of trick or treating and pretending we're someone else for the day, we're thinking of what or who, exactly, to dress as for this festive day. We've all done witches, ghosts made from old bedsheets, and some form of a superhero. How about being creative and making a statement this year?

The Presidential election is four short days after Halloween. Why not make a statement and go as your favorite Presidential Vice Presidential candidate... or even one of their spouses? If this has caught your attention, there are a few places to acquire the means to do this, all online.

The first place I checked was Target. They have available, and now on sale, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and John McCain masks. These are also available in-store, with varying items available. Competing with Target, Wal-Mart, has the three masks listed above. In a broader sense, if money isn't a problem for you, a costume specialty site, Costume Craze has everything from Obama, Clinton, and McCain, to their spouses, VP candidates, past presidents, people in different offices, and the mascots for the Democrats and Republicans. Finally, one of my favorite sites would be Political Masks. These are priced at the same level as Costume Craze, and are as believable. These are just a few places to buy the masks.

As for dressing the part, I'm afraid that if you're dressing as John McCain, you probably want to wear a suit. Whereas with Barack Obama, you can sport his more casual khaki pants, blue button-up shirt, and black dress shoes. Hillary Clinton's power outfit would be a pantsuit, if you have one. If not, a dress suit outfit is alright. With all of these, and Obama's and McCain's VP candidates, it would probably be a good idea to wear an American flag pin... or you might be pinned as "unAmerican."

Please, this Halloween, instead of donning a cliche costume, I urge you to make a statement, and make your voice heard. Go as a Presidential candidate. Whether you're trick or treating or passing out informational flyers and canvassing four days before the election, I am sure heads will turn!

GREAT suggestions! You know, I was thinking about Sarah Palin but I ended up going as a witch. Oops, same thing ;)
