Politics Get Heated, but We're All Patriotic Americans

Don't Hate Democrats or Republicans, We All Love Our Country

As most people do, I used to transform during political elections. I would attach to a candidate's policies, but later attached to the candidate emotionally. The opposing candidate became a communist, a fascist. I never could understand why people supported that person. If somebody supported the opponent, then that supporter also was a bad person.

In those times, I said and did things that I never would say or do normally. Election atmosphere changes people, and I regret these mistakes.

As I have aged and grown, my perspective has changed. I have learned that my opponents feel and act just like me. My opponents think *I* am a fascist, a communist. They think *I* am a terrible person for supporting the politicians I support. It is amazing I never realized this before.

And from this I realize that these people are no different from me. They care deeply about our country, our state, or our city. They support other policies because they believe they are the best. They may say and do nasty things, but deep down they are good people trying to make things better.

People criticize opposing politicians because they have different opinions, but unfortunately it often becomes personal.

One politician had illicit sexual relations while in office. To the people who supported his views, he was still a great politician. But to those who opposed his views, he could never again be trusted.

Another politician lied and started an unjust war while in office. Again, to the people who supported his views, he was still a great politician, but to those who opposed his views, he could never again be trusted.

It is important to note that these politicians were not truly demonized because of sexual relations, lies, or wars. Most of their supporters continued to think of them as good politicians even after the mistakes. However, if the politician was an opponent, then his mistakes made him the worst person in the world.

I think this is wrong. I believe that both of these politicians are good people. In fact, I believe that most people are good people, and that they are trying to do what they think is best. I believe we should recognize that others may have different views and opinions than us, but that they are still good people. We might disagree with their opinions, but these are only opinions.

We must remember this vital truth. We may disagree with our opponents, but this does not make them bad people. We can have great debates and arguments, but in the end, we should agree to disagree.

I believe this is how politics should be, and I respect my opponents despite our ideological differences.

Ultimately, I respect everybody who tries to make my country a better place.

I'm torn on how to respond because I agree with your points, but I also lean Democrat. Any Republicans with civil responses to Paul's comments? Can you think of a case where Democrats feel evil to you, but after rational thought you realize that they mean well? Republicans: Ignoring policy stances (I don't want to hear that things are justified because you support the end result), how do you feel about the lying and the civil rights violations (NSA phone records)?

Sorry Scott, I just can't see past lying about WMD and sending thousands of guys to kill and die. I also can't look past the destruction of our freedoms. The Republican power elite of today are not good people and I loathe them, and anyone who knowingly supports and defends their lies. But I do appreciate your good will approach...
