Poll: 31% Believe Vice President Dick Cheney Should Be Impeached

It has been a long time since Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich first introduced a bill in Congress to impeach Vice President Cheney, but the American public has not changed its mind about it very much. And last week he introduced another bill in Congress to try and force a vote on impeachment.

In a new poll from Rasmussen Reports, 31% of Americans say the Vice President should be impeached and thus removed from office while 40% say he should not be and 28% are not sure.

There is no surprise when the results are broken down by party with 51% of the Democrats saying they should go ahead with the impeachment proceedings and 22% saying they should not. With the Republicans, 8% vote for impeachment as do 30% of the independents.

When they asked if Cheney did violate the oath he took to
protect the Constitution of the United States, 34% said yes, 29% said no and 36% were not sure. Breaking this one down by party, the Republicans have 13% who say he did, 53% who say he did not and, most surprisingly, 34% who are not sure. With the Democrats, it is 49% who say yes, 15% who say no, and again 36% who are not sure. The independents have 38% saying he did, 22% saying he did not and an even larger number, 40% who are not sure.

They asked the respondents if they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who is active in trying to have the Vice President impeached and 25% said yes they would while 36% said they would be less likely to vote for such a candidate. Then there is another 28% who say it does not influence them one way or the other and 10% who are not sure. With the unaffiliated voters, 28% would be more likely to vote for any candidate who was working to impeach Cheney and 39% who say they would be less likely too.

The figures are very different when the respondents are asked how likely it is that the impeachment of the Vice President will really happen. There is just 5% who say it is very likely, 10% who say it is somewhat likely, 50% who say that it is not very likely and 25% say it is not at all likely.

The bill that Kucinich introduced on November 6th has been referred to the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representative, but the committee has not scheduled any hearings yet.

When it comes to how much attention the American pubic is paying to the issue, 48% say they have followed the story at least somewhat closely.

As far as Kuchinich and his campaign to become President is going, the latest polls pretty much across the board, show him getting no more than 3% of the vote.

And as a response to Guy Michaud, what evidence do you have to support your claims against congress? They TRY to pass bills that help the economy, the environment, and the country, but most if not all of them have been VETOed by BUSH. >.

Interesting. It's not likely just because Bush is in office, there'd have to be a substantial majority to get him impeached. But hey, we can dream.

Approx. 30% of the population are liberal Democrats, which fits this poll to "T". Even if polls came back with 50% in favor of impeachment, it would be very unlikely. The Democrat-controlled congress is already in the tank as a do-nothing, investigate-everything, witch-hunt every Republican with an approval rating below President Bush. It wouldn't help them to get re-elected which is Job#1 for any politician.

Interesting poll. What's the likelihood of Dick Cheney actually being impeached?
