Poll: Hillary Clinton Most Liberal

Regina Sass
Most voters view Hillary Clinton as a liberal, at least according to the latest results from Rasmussen Reports. It shows that 53% of American voters view Senator Clinton as being a liberal. Last month it was 47%, but more consistent with the results of polls taken earlier in the year. Another 39% consider Clinton to be a moderate and 10% view her as a conservative.

When compared to the other major contenders for the Democratic nomination, these figures put her slightly to the left. Senator Obama is viewed as liberal by 42% of voters, 41% say John Edwards is liberal.

These results come from all the voters grouped together. When they are split demographically, the results do reflect party affiliations.

The Democrats do not view any of the candidates as liberal, rather they view them as close to the center.

Of the Democrats polled, 33% see Clinton as liberal and 45% see her as moderate. They view her as more to the center than Obama. He is viewed as liberal by 34% and moderate by 39%. Clinton and Obama combined have the support of about half of the likely Democratic voters.

John Edwards is the only other Democratic candidate who has double-digit support and he is viewed as a liberal by 27% of the Democrats, while 44% consider him to be moderate. In last month's survey, he was seen as liberal by 33% of the Democrats.

When they asked the respondents about their views of New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Senator Joe Biden, they could not get enough voters who knew enough about them to voice an opinion.

In a previous survey, results were that voters have a negative perception of any candidates who is perceived to be politically liberal, but there is a positive perception of a candidate who they think of as progressive, which is how Clinton described herself in the last Democratic debate.

The opinion is starting to change as the election progresses and people are now starting to look at her as more middle stream. As the candidates become more well known, opinions will change
