In a recent poll from the Gallup Organization, respondents were asked to think about 8 different product types and on each one of them, to indicate whether or not they would be more likely to by an item from China, or the same type of product that was made in America, but cost as much as twice as much.
The results show that there is a high degree of concern with the American public concerning the safety of products made in China, most especially with food and children's toys. The results show that half of Americans would be willing to pay a premium price for products that have not been recalled, like electronics, that were made in America.
On the issue of food, 94% say they would by food produced in the US even if the cost twice as much as the same product from China. When it comes to children's toys, 82% say the same thing and with furniture it is 76%.
On the other products such as household appliances, shoes, home products, and clothes, the number drops to between 60 and 70%.
The products in the survey are imported mainly from China and the recent recalls will have a big impact on retailers such as discount stores and the small dollar stores that relay on Chinese imports for a great deal of their merchandise. And the Gallup Poll shows that low income Americans, who are most likely to shop in these stores, are the ones who have a high percentage who say they are willing to pay a higher price for American made products, more than those in the higher income levels. This is especially true with household appliances and electronics and to a slightly lesser degree, clothing and shoes.
The opinion is just about even when it comes to the opinions of men and women, except when it comes to the toys where 87% of women are willing to pay more, but only 77% of the men say the same.
There is a big discrepancy in the opinions of different age groups with those aged 50 and over having a higher percentage- 75%- saying they buy the more expensive American made clothes and shoes. With the 18 to 49 year olds, it is about 50%. The survey also shows similar opinions when it comes to other products like appliances, electronics, and household goods.
Earlier polls have shown that 72% of Americans are paying increased attention to where their purchases are made and 62% are making a conscious effort to avoid any products from China.

Post a CommentMade in America matters in more ways than just national pride. Take a look at everything in your house and your closet, most of it -if not all- is made in China, India or emerging economies. They are made there not because they produce quality, they are made there because they provide a source of cheap labor. Reducing labor costs creates the opportunity for larger profits to distributors and retail outlets. That point is openly discussed during sales presentations. However, look at the clothing that you wear, ever wonder way a size “Large†is not a consistant across the same product line. That’s a quality issue that surfaces from a number of issues such as pattern designs and a desire to optimize material usage. Ever wonder why zippers don’t work as well as they used to, that too is a quality issue.
You, as a consumer, are being asked to accept poor quality so that others can derive a higher profit. All of which comes at a huge cost. These are but a few of the additional cost
i think the information about job loss due to increased product purchasing from China is staggering.
Buy American, first....this article should convince all American's to stop buying imported products...they're polluting the planet...

Dave is right! Every american should focus on supporting american made products. Every US dollar that is spend on a foreign product, ends up in accounts of countries other than ours. Wake up people. Its time to purchase American made products. Check out this list or american made product manufacturers. http://www.support-america.org
Citizens of any country should always try to buy at home first. It's not hard to figure out and its not zenophopic or whatever the elite would call us that prefer to keep our money at home. Check out http://www.americansworking.com for a directory of American Made Products
We need jobs in this country and the more we support other countries products the more we are putting our own citizens out of work. We pay more for American made products in part because Americans demand higher and higher wages. I don't believe that most Americans think about this paradox, they just want the products to be as cheap as possible. I would rather pay more for American made products and bring industry back to America than buy from China or other countries. I especially do not want to depend on another country for the food that I eat. Be careful what you wish for!!
