Poll Shows Fred Thompson Gaining on Leading Candidates

Bible Doc
According to a new poll, conducted by the Los Angeles Times and Bloomberg News and posted on LifeNews.com, Fred Thompson, the former United States Senator from Tennessee and current "Law and Order" actor on NBC's popular drama, is gaining on Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton.

Thompson has not officially declared his candidacy for the nomination, but is expected to do so the week of July 4. Giuliani and Clinton still lead in the race for the Republican and Democratic nominations respectively, but Thompson is now "in a solid second place for the first time," according to the poll.

Thompson garnered 21 percent in the poll, trailing Giuliani's 27 percent. Following Thompson are Arizona Senator John McCain and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. Previous polls had shown Thompson in third or fourth place.

When conservative Republicans were separated out from the total people polled, Thompson had the greatest support.

Giuliani, with his pro-abortion view, fails with pro-life voters, as does McCain, who would have taxpayers pay for embryonic stem cell research. Romney is suspect because of what some voters perceive as a convenient "conversion" to a pro-life stance.

Thompson, on the other hand, has a 100 percent pro-life voting record in Congress, according to LifeNews, and has said that he favors overturning Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling that legalized abortion.

When the top four Republican candidates were compared, Giuliani still came out on top with 32%, but Thompson rose to 28 percent , followed at a distance by McCain's 17 percent and Romney's 14 percent.

Despite his poor showing in the L.A. Times/Bloomberg Poll, Romney still ranks high in Iowa and New Hampshire polls.

When the poll turned to the Democratic contenders, it showed that New York Senator Hillary Clinton has a 33-22 percent lead over Illinois Senator Barack Obama. Former Vice President Al Gore has the backing of 15 percent, although he has insisted that he will not run for the Presidency again.

According to the poll, John Edwards, the former North Carolina Senator and the vice presidential candidate in John Kerry's unsuccessful run for the Presidency in 2004, is now in third place, with 8 percent, far behind Clinton and Obama. Edwards had 14 percent in the Times/Bloomberg poll just two months ago.

Despite her strong lead against her Democratic competition, Clinton trailed Giuliani, Thompson, and McCain when the poll asked respondents to consider possible matchups in a general election.

The Times/Bloomberg poll surveyed 1,056 registered voters during the Jne 7-10 time period.

Fred Thompson is promoting himself as a kind of folksy "outsider". Yeah, right. He was a K Street lobbyist for many years besides being an ex-senator. I don't like liars.

I don't even like Fred Thompson on Law and Order. In fact, when I heard he had decided not to play the DA next year on the show, I thought I might start watching it again. With him on the show, and Jerry Orbach gone, it really had become pretty stale... Thompson for President, this is a joke....I'm afraid to say, right?

This is good news; Fred Thompson as a far superior candidate to Giuliani, McCain, or Romney -- and I hope that he displaces all three of those RINOs.

I love Fred Thompson. He's awesome. Not sure how I'd feel about him being President, but still, he rocks.

Overheard in Men's Room. "Hey Fred, let me borrow your comb." "Cute Rudi, It is Rudi isn't it?"
"Look Fred, no one is around, when are you going to announce?" "Announce? I thought you knew, Rudi, this is all a joke. I never intended to run. You don't mean you bought into all that stuff Rudi? It is Rudi, isn't it?"

"Rudi, get up off the floor, it's nasty down there. Look Pal, I have to run, give me a call on my cell in about an hour." "Fred, what's the number? Fred what's the . . . Fred!
